Based in a splendid art nouveau building, the Hôtel Hannon, the Espace Photographique Contretype has been running an artist residency programme since 1997, which has led to the development of a collection of more than 250 items. This collection is being highlighted in two ways this summer: in a general way at the Centrale for Contemporary Art and with a particular focus on the seven female residents at Contretype itself. Whether by Brussels photographers such as Erika Vancouver and Chantal Maes or by foreigners such as Sári Ember (a Hungarian born in São Paulo), Isabelle Hayeur from Canada, or Elina Brotherus from Finland, the pictures on display were all taken in Brussels. They represent, however, an extension of individual bodies of work, rather than a strictly documentary approach. In the portraits, landscapes, details of the urban setting, and interiors, the past and present, outside and inside, the changing and the immutable, and the intimate and the exotic are brought face to face. A fine ensemble.
