Hungry for some exciting exhibitions this week? Here are three recommendations.

Plakaty unseen: gedurfde Oostblokgrafiek

Eryk Lipinski, Jan Mlodozeniec en Roman Cieslewicz, het zouden de namen kunnen zijn van obscure Oost-Europese polsstokspringers, maar collectioneurs betalen grof geld voor de filmposters van deze Poolse artiesten. Na WO II kende de filmposterkunst in Polen een ongeziene vrijheid, in tegenstelling tot de filmproductie die streng gecontroleerd werd door de staat. Wat deze posters uniek maakt, is dat ze minder focussen op de gezichten van filmsterren en zo de fantasie de vrije loop laten. Niet zelden werd een poster zelfs ontworpen zonder dat de film bekeken werd, maar dat leverde wel pareltjes op van gedurfde Oostblok-grafiek. (GH)

Photocity : un raz-de-marée d’images

Une ville de la photo qui s’étend sur 15.000 m². 80 photographes venus du monde entier exposent leurs clichés dans 50 containers disposés sur le site de Tour et Taxis. Le concept né à New York débarque chez nous cet été associant dédale urbain et découverte photographique. Pour sa programmation, l’événement peut compter sur la participation du National Geographic avec trois expositions thématiques, mais aussi les ressources de quelques galeries bruxelloises pour faire couleur locale. Dans l’exploration de ce village culturel, on pourra faire un arrêt au bar, à un espace détente, et assister à des projections de films et des concerts. (GB)

Deniz Pasha: the faces of the African diaspora

“When your back is pushed up against the wall, you go to the deepest part of yourself, and there's a response – it's your great ancestors talking. It's blood memory.” The words by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and “theatre's poet of Black America” August Wilson (Fences, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) have left their mark on Turkish artist Deniz Pasha. In her exhibition “Blood Money”, running concurrently at the Brussels gallery Ballon Rouge and at The Pill in Istanbul, she presents a series of paintings that delve deep into the Ottoman Empire's policies towards African bodies and give faces to those invisible bodies.
