26 September is the European Day of Languages, a day centred on the wealth of languages in the European Union. For the past few years, the network of European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) has chosen to honour those languages with the poetry that is written in them. The point is to present European poetry on the public transport network, in public spaces, and in places favourably disposed to literature. The art of translation is thus automatically also being highlighted, and the European institutions’ central annual theme is being made concrete. This year, the theme is active citizenship. So what’s on the programme? First, anyone who takes the metro between 24 September and 21 October will see stickers with poems by poets from one of the participating countries along with a Dutch and French translation. There will be posters and take-away sheets of poems on busses and trams. Furthermore, from 26 September until 26 October, there will be an exhibition with all the poems at the galerie Anspachgalerij (boulevard Anspachlaan 24). And last but not least, two poetry evenings are being organised. On 26 September at 8 pm, eight European poets will perform at Passa Porta, with surtitles in French, Dutch, and English. And on 17 October at 8 pm, four more poets will read from their work at the Hungarian Balassi Institute (Treurenberg 10).
