Cannes, our French connection /episode 1

In a few hours, the 65^th Cannes Film Festival will officially open. Hundreds of eager fans have already taken their places in front of the famous stairs of the Palais des Festivals, which serve as a red carpet, in the hope of catching a glimpse of Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, or Bruce Willis. They all star in the festival’s opening film, Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. If Bruce Willis falls down the stairs, I will have to hear about from my colleagues because during the opening ceremony, I will be in the second biggest auditorium watching the press screening of Baad el Mawkeaa (Après la bataille): a two-hour Egyptian film. Shown in competition, the film is about a man who participated in the violence committed against young people who gathered on the Tahrir Square last February to force President Moubarak to resign, and a woman who supported the revolution. The glitter and glamour are alluring, but this is primarily a film festival – the most important in the world, in fact. For approximately four thousand journalists, the festival started this afternoon with the press screening and press conference of Moonrise Kingdom (a good film). For the press, the first days of the festival are always about running from one PR agency to the other trying to get interviews. Edward Norton and Brad Pitt: no. Tim Roth and Gael García Bernal: yes. All in all, not a bad start.

--NL-- Nog een paar uur en de aftrap van het 65e Festival van Cannes wordt gegeven. Voor de beroemde trappen van het Palais des Festivals die dienstdoen als rode loper hebben nu al honderden kijklustigen postgevat in de hoop straks een glimp op te vangen van Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton of Bruce Willis. Zij spelen allemaal mee in de openingsfilm: Moonrise kingdom van Wes Anderson. Als Bruce Willis van de trappen dondert, zal ik het van de collega's moeten vernemen. Tijdens de openingsceremonie zit ik in de tweede grootste filmzaal voor de persvisie van Baad el mawkeaa (Après la bataille): een twee uur durende Egyptische competitiefilm over een man die meedeed met het geweld tegen de jongeren die februari vorig jaar op het Tahrirplein president Moubarak tot aftreden dwongen en een vrouw die de revolutie juist goed gezind was. De glitter en glamour spreken tot de verbeelding, maar dit blijft in de eerste plaats een filmfestival, het belangrijkste ter wereld zelfs. Voor om en bij de vierduizend journalisten begon het festival vanmiddag al met de persvisie en de persconferentie van Moonrise kingdom (leuke film). Vaste prik op de eerste dagen van het festival is het aflopen van PR-bureaus om interviews te versieren. Edward Norton en Brad Pitt: nee. Tim Roth en Gael García Bernal: ja. Al bij al geen slecht begin.

--FR-- Dans quelques heures, le coup d’envoi du 65e Festival de Cannes sera donné. On compte déjà des centaines de curieux devant les fameux escaliers du Palais des Festivals supportant le tapis rouge, postés là dans l’espoir d’apercevoir tout à l’heure Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton ou Bruce Willis. Ils jouent tous dans le film d’ouverture : Moonrise Kingdom de Wes Anderson. Si jamais Bruce Willis devait dégringoler les marches, je ne pourrais le savoir que via mes collègues : pendant la cérémonie d’ouverture, je serai dans une autre salle de projection – la seconde en termes de capacité - pour la vision de presse de Baad el Mawkeaa (Après la bataille) : un film égyptien de 2 heures, en compétition, sur un homme qui participe aux violences contre les jeunes qui ont poussé, en février dernier sur la place Tahrir, le président Moubarak à abdiquer et une femme favorable à la révolution. Les paillettes et le glamour font rêver, mais cela est et reste en premier lieu un festival de cinéma, le plus important du monde. Pour les 4.000 journalistes présents, le festival a déjà commencé ce midi avec la vision et la conférence de presse de Moonrise Kingdom (un chouette film). Incontournable lors des premiers jours du festival : la course aux attachés de presse pour décrocher des interviews. Edward Norton et Brad Pitt : non. Tim Roth et Gael García Bernal : oui. Bon, ça ne commence pas trop mal…
