What else are the Irish capable of, apart from drinking and singing? Brussels is about to find out, thanks to the cultural programme that marks their presidency of the EU.

Let’s start with music, all the same: on 24 April Flagey will host a gala concert by the Irish traditional-music group the Chieftains, in aid of the humanitarian projects of the Association Femmes d’Europe.
In “Changing States: Contemporary Irish Art and Francis Bacon’s Studio” (28 February > 19 May 2013) Bozar will present the diversity of contemporary Irish art. The exhibition will include work by twenty artists, as well as archive material, photographs, and unfinished paintings from the studio of the Dublin-born painter Francis Bacon, who died in 1992. From 1 April to the end of May we can also enjoy Irish contemporary art in a “pop-up” (instant/temporary) Brussels gallery, as presented by the well-known Rubicon Gallery in Dublin. The series of exhibitions is being organised under the overall title of “The Future Perfect”. In addition, the Irish artists Gareth Kennedy and Sarah Browne will have work included in the European group exhibition “United States of Europe Project: How Capital Moves” in De Markten.
In cooperation with the Irish Film Institute, from 17 March (St Patrick’s Day) until 30 April, Cinematek will present a retrospective focusing on Jim Sheridan. As well as films directed by the man himself (My Left Foot will be screened in the presence of the director on 22 March), this will also include other films chosen by Sheridan. In addition, Flagey will be screening a 1926 Irish silent film, Irish Destiny, which can be seen on 17 March with a new score by the Irish composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. On the literary front, Anne Enright will be one of the headline guests at the international Passa Porta Festival from 20 to 24 March.
