In his short documentary Brussels Express, director Sander Vandenbroucke from Ixelles zooms in on Brussels bike messengers. Their task of crossing one of Europe’s most congested cities – where only 4% of traffic is made up of bikes – is an unenviable one, and yet, they do get around much faster than motorised couriers. Vandenbroucke followed the bicycle couriers for several months, and has interviewed several protagonists in the debate, including Danny Smagghe (Touring), Klaus Bondam (former bicycle mayor of Kopenhagen), Roel De Cleen (Fietsersbond Brussel), Karl-Heinz Pohl (Pedal Bxl). Brussels Express integrates an impressive amount of stunningly filmed urban footage, and aims at making a positive statement, visualising the beginning of a change for the better.
The movie premiered on 10 May at the Beursschouwburg, but you can see it for free on www.brusselsexpressfilm.be. Let us know what you think of the film!
