Taking the temperature at Fotofever

After a successful first edition in Paris, this weekend, the second edition of Fotofever has arrived in Brussels. No less than 60 galleries from all over Europe are giving an update on what’s hot in contemporary photography and video art.
Expectations of the first Brussels edition of the European contemporary photography and video art fair ran high, but we weren't completely convinced. As all fairs, Fotofever has its ups and downs. But a great deal of the abundant large format photographs, Polaroids, and photomontages was at the least of a dubious quality. On the other side, if you look well, there's also work to be found that exceeds expectations.

The Brussels' Box Galerie for example, presented very strong black-and-white images by Alberto García-Alix, Larry Fink and Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert.
Fifty One Fine Art Photography from Antwerp is showing the work of classic masters of photography such as William Klein, Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keïta, as well as the beautiful 1950s street photography by Saul Leiter.

Stieglitz 19, also from Antwerp, has the autobiographical work of Lara Gasparotto, who works and lives in Brussels, on display. Marko Zink from Galerie Michaela Stock stands out with a series about an empty and deserted spa. The Cuban photographer Luis Mallo from Modernartgalerie surprises with the two series In Camera and Open Secrets.

The work of the Polish Anna Orlowska can be found completely in the back. The appropriate winner of Fotofever's annual Fotoprize deserves much better.
