The Brussels gallery scene will soon have a new place to be: five galleries will be moving into a building on Regentschapsstraat/rue de la Régence that was originally intended to house the Delvaux Museum. That plan has now been cancelled, financial newspaper De Tijd reports. Three of the five galleries are from Brussels, Jan Mot and Catherine Bastide, both formerly located in the Dansaert quarter, and Galerie Waldburger, located in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles. The striking newcomers are Chez Valentin from Paris and especially Galerie Micheline Szwajcer, which – like galleries Van der Mieden, Kusseneers, and Office Baroque earlier this year – is moving away from Antwerp and will open doors with an exhibition of work by Brussels artist Ann Veronica Janssens (photo). The move again confirms that it is no longer Antwerp, but Brussels – and especially uptown Brussels – that is now the epicentre of the trade in contemporary art. The five galleries will open on 21 June.
