All you want for Xmas: our tips for the holidays

We desperately need a holiday, but due to an acute bout of shame about flying and skiing, we’re staying home this year. Fortunately, there are an enormous number of things to do in Brussels over the coming weeks. We have selected a series of top tips for you.

ELECTRO / Braindance

An XL edition of Braindance, the popular electronica concept at the Ancienne Belgique, is a perfect excuse for the Brussels concert hall to put on its dancing shoes and say goodbye to 2019 with an old-fashioned all-nighter. In addition to the perennially infectious headliner Modeselektor, we are especially looking forward to the K-house sensation Park Hye Jin and the experimental set by the new Brainfeeder hero Iglooghost. Le Motel is playing a home game with a lot of ethnic sounds and a special AV show, and despite their exotic titles, Borokov Borokov and Y O K O C H O are only coming over from Antwerp.

THEATER / Clash

Enkele jaren geleden maakten Joost Vandecasteele en Joris Van den Brande de Bronks-productie Sorry voor alles, over een stel dementerende personages die de toestand van de wereld in blessuretijd bespraken met God zelve. De kompanen keren nu terug van de kosmos om een Clash tussen lichaam en geest te organiseren. “Wij zoeken een verklaring waarom de kop zo vijandig is. Het lijf wil gewoon rustig zitten, spelen of plezier maken, maar rond de puberteit wordt het speelse en kinderlijke plots gênant. Volgens ons begint de kop op dat moment het lijf te commanderen. Hoe cool zou het zijn als het lijf in opstand kwam tegen de kop?”

FILM / The Rise of Skywalker

Le pouvoir Jedi de l’héroïne Rey lui permettra-t-elle d’affronter son ennemi juré Kylo qui a succombé au côté obscur de la force ? Va-t-on enfin savoir si Chewbacca brosse sa fourrure ? Ce ne sont là que deux des nombreuses questions qui devraient être éclaircies dans The Rise of Skywalker. L’épisode IX marque la fin de la troisième des trois trilogies Star Wars et la fin de la saga Skywalker qui a commencé en 1977 avec A New Hope. Un film événement très attendu donc. La mission de cet atterrissage a été confiée à J.J. Abrams. Que l’art de conclure soit avec lui.

THEATER / Smoke

Al veertien jaar lang neemt de door zijn vrouw verlaten Auggie elke dag op hetzelfde uur een foto voor zijn sigarenwinkel in Brooklyn. Op een dag ontdekt zijn trouwe klant Paul, een leeggeschreven schrijver, dat zijn vermoorde vrouw op verschillende van die foto’s te zien is. En dat is niet het enige toeval in het stadsdrama Smoke, gebaseerd op de New Yorkse filmklassieker van Paul Auster en Wayn Wang uit 1995 met Harvey Keitel en William Hurt. De Antwerpse gezelschappen SKaGeN en De Roovers brengen de rokerige film noir nu naar de scène.

THÉÂTRE / Dieu le Père

Après avoir conquis le public et la critique avec son précédent spectacle On the Road...A, Roda Fawaz signe un retour toujours aussi autobiographique avec Dieu le Père. On y retrouve son père, absent, qu’il tente cette fois de rejoindre. Et sa mère, aussi dévouée à Allah qu’à son salon de beauté. Dans ce nouveau one man show, l’acteur et metteur en scène belge, né au Maroc et ayant grandi en Guinée, continue de détricoter son identité éclatée avec un humour à la fois comique, doucement sarcastique et intensément lucide. Avis à tous les paumés identitaires. Roda Fawaz pourrait bien nous sauver.

FILM / Little Joe

Een wetenschapster heeft een plant ontwikkeld die de mensen in haar omgeving gelukkig maakt. In theorie is de naar haar tienerzoon Joe genoemde bloem steriel, in de praktijk heeft ze misschien een manier gevonden om zich toch voort te planten. Met haar gedurfde filmstijl en haar aparte gevoel voor humor en het unheimliche, onderscheidt de Oostenrijkse regisseuse Jessica Hausner zich vlotjes van de grijze massa. In Little Joe varieert ze met veel ironie en de bedoeling u te verwarren op Frankenstein, Invasion of the body snatchers en Little shop of horrors.

MUZIEKTHEATER / Melancholie aan de vijf blokken

Het zwaard van Damocles hangt al even boven de woonblokken aan de Papenvest: ze moeten plaatsmaken voor luxewoningen en dito bewoners. Het Brecht-­Eislerkoor praatte met de onteigende bewoners en goot hun ontzetting in Melancholie aan de vijf blokken, een pakkende muzikale voorstelling over armoede, kwetsbaarheid en een gebrek aan inspraak.

JAZZ / Melanie De Biasio

A few years ago, jazz singer and flautist Melanie De Biasio left Brussels to return to Charleroi, the city of her birth, to pursue an old dream. She rebuilt the 19th-century building that once housed the Italian consulate into the artists’ residence Alba. The name refers to sunrise, a metaphor for the awakening of new talent and artistic transitions, which are the central focus here, including in the rehearsal space and recording studio. The proceeds of the two performances at Flagey, which happen to be the opening concerts of the Brussels Jazz Festival, will be donated to this work in progress.

THÉÂTRE / Noël au Théâtre

C’est un théâtre où tout est possible. Les moyens scéniques sont parfois dérisoires mais l’imagination comme l’âge du public n’ont pas de limites. Noël au Théâtre, c’est parler la langue des chats avec l’étranger qui est en nous, c’est rencontrer un ours né d’une grattouille ou expliquer la philosophie d’Hannah Arendt avec des marionnettes. Cette année, le festival présente 22 spectacles dont cinq créations dans une dizaine de lieux bruxellois. Il y aura aussi un focus Afrique avec deux spectacles nés de la rencontre de compagnies belges et africaines pour un conte écologique et une nouvelle version de Pinocchio racontée par une griotte.
