No more claws or sharp teeth: on 11 July, the Flemish Lion will be showing his amiable, affable side and inviting you to dance. For the second time, the organisers of the Brussels festivities to mark the traditional Flemish holiday, Muntpunt, are making the event an occasion for collective fraternisation. And there could hardly be a better way than to dance our way into the summer together.
The Grote Markt/Grand-place and the Muntplein/place de la Monnaie will be at the heart of the celebrations. The capital’s finest square will host DJ Buscemi and living legend Rocco Granata, among others. With one and the same mission: to get everyone, both locals and tourists, from Afghans to Belarusians, moving to Latin American rhythms: so it’s time to dig out those salsa shoes! Muntpunt will ensure that the public, even the stiffest pokers among them, will be able to enjoy both accessible, irresistible dance acts and beginners’ instructions for your first steps.
All day long on the Muntplein/place de la Monnaie it will be about young people and urban culture, with dance battles, hip-hop acts, flash mobs, etc., as well as skateboard stunts and textile printing. At 11 pm, DJs TLP and Lefto will kick off an after-party under the starry sky, which will go on until the wee small hours.
If you would prefer something more intimate, then the Spiegelzaal (“Mirror Room”) of the Brussels Parliament will be the place to be from 5 pm on, as DJ Zaki tempts you with the best Belpop slows of the past and present. And if you fancy tumbling from one atmosphere into the other, there is also an erratic “dance trail”, leading from the Europaplein/carrefour de l’Europe to the Muntplein/place de la Monnaie, along which you can, for example, learn the famous chair dance from the Rosas danst Rosas choreography or let yourself go to the rhythmic tones of a variety of bands, accompanied by some light-hearted dancers. Let’s dance!
