The Puentes festival aims to strengthen the links between Argentina and Belgium – and what better way to do so than through culture? Throughout the month of May, the festival will build bridges (puentes) between the South American country and Belgium. Apart from the obligatory tango, there will be contemporary dance, audio-visual art, folk dance, theatre, talks, and a number of exhibitions. A few tips. In terms of music, one event to look out for is Rumbabalkanica (2 May, Grasmarkt/Marché aux Herbes), a collaboration between the Orchestre International du Vetex, Seis Pal Quinteto, and two musicians from eastern Europe aimed at creating connections between Belgium, Argentina, and the Balkans. Lovers of tango should make their way to La Tentation on 10 May for the Tango Tinto quintet (10 May) and the El Tongo Duo (16 May). There will also be performances of tango and of Argentine folk dance. El Juntacadáveres (26 May, Pianofabriek) will prove that tango is no fossilised genre. The Antwerp-Argentine combo’s tango is played on two bandoneons, with all the energy of rock and roll – and they even have rappers as guests! Le Bazaar, a charming little club in the Marollen/Marolles district will host Sysmo (23 May), a group of twelve percussionists who compose their music in real time – a new concept straight from the Ciudad Cultural Konex in Buenos Aires. Heavy stuff and just made for dancing! Lovers of painting should visit Cellule 133a on 19 May to see “Made in Argentina” by Natalia Stanfield, an Argentine resident of Brussels. There will also be a selection of documentaries on Patagonia, Argentina’s “Far South”.
