Workspace Brussels presents the fifth edition of its short festival Working Title Platform. For three days, you can enjoy eight performances at four locations. Traditionally, these are not finished productions, but hot works-in-progress. This is where the international battery of artists that have been in residence at Workspace Brussels submits its work to the general public. And audiences are able to have their say; during post-performance debates, the artists and audiences listen to the public’s opinions. Two performances have already caught
our eye.
The mini festival is kicking off at the Beursschouwburg with the extremely promising Macho Dancer by Eisa Jocson. In the show, the Filipina practices “macho dancing”, a typically male style of dancing from the nightclubs of her homeland, often danced by marginalised men. By playing a man, Jocson aims to raise questions related to sexuality. More importantly, she also plays with the contrast between the macho dancers’ weak social position and their very macho dance.
At the Kaaistudio’s, Chilean-Dutch Rodrigo Sobarzo de Larraechea promises to deliver a physical spectacle. In Apnea, a synonym for “temporary pause for breath”, he revives the shows of so-called “escape artists”: daredevils who risk their lives in experiments to shock the audience. What exactly he will do should be a surprise, but it is partly related to water and diving and partly to silence and timelessness. Your feedback will be most appreciated.
