Vrienden, Romeinen, landgenoten, leen me uw oor. Iedereen weet toch dat Antwerpen een plezaentere stad is dan Brussel, dat president Bush de aanslagen van elf september 2001 zelf beraamde en dat William Shakespeare zijn oeuvre niet zelf bijeen pende? Mocht er over dat laatste nog enige twijfel bestaan, dan maakt de nieuwste film van Roland Emmerich daar korte metten mee. De Bard was een fraudeur! Een ongeletterde paljas op de koop toe. De aan hem toegeschreven stukken zijn eigenlijk het werk van Edward de Vere, 17^th Earl of Oxford en een intimus van Queen Elizabeth I. Hoe het complot precies in elkaar steekt, gaan we u niet uitleggen. Ten eerste verbrodden we daarmee de film. Ten tweede begrijpen we het zelf niet. Het zit allemaal nogal complex in elkaar en de hele uitleg is redelijk slaapverwekkend. Emmerich zet de hele van de pot gerukte samenzweringstheorie even subtiel in beeld als zijn meesterwerken Independence day and The day after tomorrow. Aan geld om zestiende-eeuws Londen te recreëren en de cast in opvallende kostuums te steken was er geen gebrek. Niet geholpen door de zwakke dialogen, gaat meer dan één acteur de mist in. Maar dat is allemaal geen reden om aan de waarheid te twijfelen. Den Duits was in de buurt toen Koning Albert I in Marche-les-Dames van de rots donderde.

Tout le monde sait qu’Anvers est une ville plus agréable que Bruxelles, que le président Bush a lui-même ourdi les attentats du 11 septembre 2001 et que William Shakespeare n’a pas écrit un traître mot de l’œuvre qu’on lui attribue. Et s’il restait encore l’un ou l’autre doute à ce sujet, le nouveau film de Roland Emmerich met les choses au point. Le Grand Will était un escroc ! Et un ridicule illettré par-dessus le marché. Les pièces qu’il a soi-disant écrites sont en réalité de la main d’Edward de Vere, 17^e Comte d’Oxford et intime de la reine Elizabeth I. Nous n’allons pas vous expliquer ici comment le complot s’est mis en place. D’abord ce serait vous gâcher le film. Et en plus, on n’a pas vraiment compris. Tout cela est assez complexe et l’explication dans son ensemble est plutôt soporifique. Emmerich met en images cette théorie du complot universel loufoque avec la subtilité de ses autres chefs-d’œuvre Independence Day et The Day After Tomorrow. On n’a bien sûr pas manqué d’argent pour recréer le Londres du XVI^e siècle et habiller les acteurs de costumes extravagants. Les dialogues mal foutus n’aidant pas vraiment, plus d’un acteur s’égare dans le brouillard. Mais tout cela n’est pas une raison pour douter de la vérité. Les Boches étaient dans les parages quand le roi Albert I^er a chuté du rocher à Marche-les-Dames.

Doesn’t everybody know that Antwerp is a nicer city than Brussels, that President Bush plotted the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and that Shakespeare didn’t write his own plays? If there remains any doubt whatsoever on the last point, Roland Emmerich’s latest film resolves the issue for good. The Bard was a fraud! And what’s more, he was an illiterate buffoon. All the works attributed to him were actually written by Edward de Vere, 17^th Earl of Oxford and an intimate of Queen Elizabeth I. We will not explain how exactly the conspiracy was executed. For one thing, it would spoil the film. And secondly, we don’t really understand it ourselves. It is all very complex and the whole explanation is rather soporific. Emmerich’s presentation of the whole far-fetched conspiracy theory is as subtle as in his masterpieces Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. There was clearly no shortage of money to recreate 16^th century London and to dress the cast in conspicuous costumes. Unaided by the weak dialogues, more than one actor goes awry. But none of that is any reason to doubt the truth. Germans were in the area when the Belgian King Albert I tumbled from the rock in Marche-les-Dames.
