The Awakening

The DVD is already available across the North Sea, but if I were you, I would take the opportunity to see the Golden Raven winner of the last Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival at the cinema. Just like The Woman in Black a few weeks ago, it is a skilfully made horror film that doesn’t just aim to chase those with weak stomachs out of the room. The scares are chilling, not gory. No expense was spared on the sets. Rebecca Hall (The Prestige, The Town) has jumped at the chance to prove that she can handle leading roles, and how. She plays Florence Cathcart, a sceptical writer and scientist who has mastered the art of unmasking frauds who use paranormal hocus pocus to profit from the gullible in early 1920s England who are still mourning the countless victims of World War I. A handsome Latin teacher (Dominic West) asks her to investigate the rumour that a pupil at a boarding school in the Lake District died of fright after seeing a ghost. It turns out to be a harder task than expected for the rationalist because her ominous discoveries keep piling up. You might compare it to Amenábar’s The Others or The Innocents starring Deborah Kerr, but not completely because unfortunately, the makers forgot to make the film end as well as it begins.

--NL-- Aan de andere kant van de Noordzee is de dvd al beschikbaar, maar de winnaar van de Gouden Raaf van het voorbije Brussels Festival van de Fantastische Film kunt u best in de bioscoop bekijken. Net als The woman in black een paar weken geleden is het een vakkundig gemaakte huiverfilm die er niet op uit is om mensen met een zwakke maag de zaal uit te jagen. Op decors werd niet bespaard. Rebecca Hall (The prestige, The town) grijpt de kans om te bewijzen dat ze hoofdrollen aankan met beide handen. Ze speelt Florence Cathcart, een sceptische schrijfster en wetenschapper die zich bekwaamde in het ontmaskeren van bedriegers die met paranormale hocus pocus willen profiteren van de goedgelovige medemens die in het Engeland van 1921 nog massaal rouwt om de vele doden van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Op vraag van de knappe leraar Latijn (Dominic West) onderzoekt ze op een kostschool in het Lake District het gerucht dat een leerling van schrik stierf na het zien van een geest. Het blijkt een veel zwaardere beproeving dan gedacht voor de rationalist, want de onheilspellende ontdekkingen stapelen zich op. Denk aan The others van Alejandro Amenábar of The innocents met Deborah Kerr, maar niet te lang want men is helaas vergeten om de film even sterk te laten eindigen als hij begint.

--FR-- Le DVD est déjà disponible de l’autre côté de la Manche, mais si j’étais vous, je saisirais la chance de voir au cinéma le film qui a remporté le Corbeau d’Or au dernier BIFFF. Comme The Woman in Black sorti il y a quelques semaines, c’est un film d’épouvante fait avec compétence qui ne vise pas absolument à faire courir les spectateurs à l’estomac fragile hors de la salle. L’horreur reste soutenable. On n’a pas lésiné sur les décors. Rebecca Hall (The Prestige, The Town) profite de cette opportunité pour prouver qu’elle peut endosser des rôles principaux. Elle incarne Florence Cathcart, auteure et scientifique sceptique spécialisée dans le fait de démasquer les imposteurs qui voudraient profiter, à coups de mystères paranormaux, de la crédulité de leurs semblables. Dans l’Angleterre de 1921, beaucoup portent encore le deuil des nombreux morts tombés pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. À la demande d’un séduisant professeur de latin (Dominic West), elle mène l’enquête dans un pensionnat du Lake District où, selon la rumeur, un élève serait mort de peur après avoir vu un fantôme. L’épreuve sera bien plus pénible que prévu pour cet esprit rationnel, les découvertes macabres se succédant. On pense à The Others d’Alejandro Amenábar ou à The Innocents avec Deborah Kerr, mais pas très longtemps car malheureusement, on a oublié de donner au film une fin aussi palpitante que son début.
