Baby Balloon

After 2005’s Bunker Paradise, we had to wait eight years for a second feature-length film by Stefan Liberski (Les Snuls). The third, a film adaptation of a book by Amélie Nothomb, is currently in production. While in Bunker Paradise he portrayed young people with filthy-rich parents who have nothing better to do than party, this time he films an 18-year-old girl from one of the poorer neighbourhoods of Liège. She does not feel very comfortable in her own skin. After an exciting start, after a while the engine unfortunately starts sputtering. The supporting characters (the insensitive mother, the boss, the manager, the fan) are all caricatural. After the opening scene the plot barely develops at all. The obese 18-year-old Bici is in love with one of the boys in her rock band. Vince, however, thinks of her more as a sister or friend, and he falls for a skinny humanitarian aid worker. By trial and error, Bici learns how to deal with her frustrations and to accept herself. Not a new, but certainly an encouraging story. The Brussels actress Ambre Grouwels is wonderful in both the restrained and the exuberant scenes, and has the voice and the stage presence to handle real musical performances. Though the film as a whole does not convince, there are several, mostly musical scenes that do work and inconspicuous shots like “Bici looks out the bus window” that are moving.

NL ❙ Na Bunker paradise uit 2005 was het acht jaar wachten op een tweede langspeelfilm van Stefan Liberski (zie radio- en televisiefenomeen Les Snuls). De derde, een verfilming van een boek van Amélie Nothomb, is wel al in de maak. Portretteerde hij in Bunker paradise nog jongeren met steenrijke ouders die niets beters te doen hebben dan fuiven, dan filmt hij dit keer een achttienjarig meisje uit een van de armere wijken van Luik. Ook zij zit niet goed in haar vel. Na een wervelend begin duiken helaas tempoproblemen op. Nevenpersonages (de ongevoelige moeder, de baas, de manager, de fan) zijn karikaturaal. Aan de intrige verandert na de openingsscène nauwelijks nog iets. De zwaarlijvige achttienjarige Bici is verliefd op een van de jongens uit haar rockgroep. Vince ziet haar echter meer als een zus of vriendin en papt aan met een slanke die aan humanitaire hulp doet. Met vallen en opstaan leert Bici omgaan met frustraties en leert ze zichzelf te aanvaarden. Geen nieuw, wel een bemoedigend verhaal. De Brusselse Ambre Grouwels is geweldig in zowel de ingetogen als de uitbundige scènes en heeft de stem en de présence om echte muziekoptredens aan te kunnen. Het geheel mag dan niet overtuigen, er zijn een heleboel, veelal muzikale, scènes die wel werken en onopvallende opnames genre ‘Bici kijkt door het busraam’ die wel aangrijpen.

S’il dressait dans Bunker Paradise le portrait de jeunes gens aux parents ultra riches qui n’avaient rien de mieux à faire que la fête, il se concentre cette fois sur une fille d’un quartier défavorisé de Liège. Elle non plus n’est pas bien dans sa peau. Après un début virevoltant, il y a malheureusement des problèmes de tempo qui surgissent. Les personnages secondaires (la mère insensible, le patron, le manager, le fan) sont caricaturaux. Après la scène d’ouverture, la situation ne change pas fondamentalement. Bici, 18 ans, corpulente, est amoureuse d’un des membres de son groupe de rock. Vince la considère plutôt comme une sœur ou une amie et fait de l’œil à une fille plus mince qui travaille dans l’humanitaire. En tombant et en se relevant, Bici apprend à s’accommoder de ses frustrations et à s’accepter elle-même. L’histoire n’est pas neuve, mais bien réconfortante. L’actrice bruxelloise Ambre Grouwels est formidable, aussi bien dans les scènes intimistes que dans l’exubérance et elle possède la voix et la présence scénique nécessaires pour assumer de vraies scènes de concert. L’ensemble ne convainc pas vraiment, mais il y a toutefois plusieurs scènes, essentiellement musicales, qui fonctionnent et des plans discrets genre « Bici regarde par la fenêtre du bus » qui émeuvent.
