Being Flynn

Apparently it really happened to the author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City: his mother committed suicide when he was 22, and then the father he hardly knew showed up one day in the homeless shelter he worked at. And yet, the film adaptation makes an artificial impression rather than an authentic one. The father has become an extremely colourful figure. Among other things, that is because Robert De Niro lays it on extra thick. His Jonathan Flynn is a misanthropic taxi driver who imagines he is one of America’s three greatest writers (the other two being J.D. Salinger and Mark Twain), but who has ended up in the gutter because he is a) a terrible drunk and b) insufferable. Paul Dano, on the other hand, refuses to act brusquely. He plays the son who doesn’t know where to start with the ailing, unpleasant father he has found again. At the same time, he can’t help but see certain similarities. They are both positive, such as love for the written word, and negative, such as a penchant for addiction and self-destruction. Director Paul Weitz (Little Fockers, About a Boy) does not fall prey to coarse sentimentality or false melodrama, but the idea of using two narrators (the father and the son) is not great. However, the film never falls flat and even manages to peak once or twice. Not bad.

Toch komt de verfilming van het boek eerder gekunsteld dan authentiek over. De vader is een wel erg kleurrijke figuur geworden. Onder andere omdat Robert De Niro het er dik op legt. Zijn Jonathan Flynn is een misantropische taxi driver die zichzelf een van de drie grote Amerikaanse schrijvers waant (de andere twee: J.D. Salinger en Mark Twain) maar in de goot belandt door a) verschrikkelijk te zuipen en b) onuitstaanbaar te zijn. Paul Dano weigert dan weer met de grove borstel te acteren. Hij is de zoon die zich geen raad weet met zijn teruggevonden maar zwaar sukkelende, onaangename vader. Tegelijkertijd kan hij niet anders dan bepaalde gelijkenissen vaststellen. Positieve zoals de liefde voor het woord maar ook negatieve zoals een aanleg voor verslaving en zelfdestructie. Regisseur Paul Weitz (Little Fockers, About a boy) trapt niet in de val van plat sentiment of vals melodrama. Het ideetje om met twee vertellers (de vader en de zoon) te werken, is geen voltreffer. Maar de film gaat nooit onderuit én kan een paar keer pieken. Niet slecht.

Pourtant, l’adaptation du livre semble plus artificielle qu’authentique. Le père est devenu un personnage bien haut en couleur. Notamment parce que Robert De Niro surjoue un peu. Son Jonathan Flynn est un taxi driver misanthrope qui se considère lui-même comme l’un des trois grands auteurs américains (les deux autres sont J.D. Salinger et Mark Twain), mais se retrouve dans la mouise parce que 1) il boit comme un trou et 2) il est insupportable. Paul Dano, lui, refuse de servir un jeu à la grosse louche. Il incarne le fils qui ne sait pas quoi faire de ce père qu’il a retrouvé, mais qui est désagréable et couvert de problèmes. En même temps, il ne peut s’empêcher de remarquer certains points de ressemblance. Des points positifs, comme l’amour des mots, mais aussi négatifs comme une propension à l’addiction et à l’autodestruction. Le réalisateur, Paul Weitz (Little Fockers, About a Boy), ne tombe pas dans le piège des sentiments servis platement ou du faux mélodrame. L’idée de travailler avec deux narrateurs (le père et le fils) n’est pas une réussite totale. Mais le film ne se casse jamais la gueule et sait quelques fois donner la chair de poule. Pas mal.
