Adam McKay used to work for the comedian Will Ferrell, but since 2015, he has had a different speciality: making comic films with the biggest film stars about tricky subjects that garner more Oscar nominations than can be counted on one hand. After the financial crisis (The Big Short) and the shadowy former vice president Dick Cheney (Vice), McKay tackles the climate crisis, and in particular America's grotesque ignoring of the catastrophe, in a satire.

Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio play two astronomers who discover that a comet will destroy the earth. Their alarm is drowned out by a Trumpian president (Streep), infotainment woes, celebrity culture and megalomaniac Big Tech gurus.
