'Drive My Car': mysterious, sensual and in no hurry at all

Niels Ruëll

The Oscar for Best Film may for the third year in a row go to an Asian film. Ryusuke Hamaguchi is nominated with Drive My Car. Spike Lee and Barack Obama are fans of the mysterious, sensual, unhurried talkie about grief, regret, sex and the passing of time.

Hamaguchi starts from a short story by Haruki Murakami and throws the Russian theatre giant Anton Chekhov's Uncle Wanja into the mix. But above all, he does not forget to make the images the engine of the indefinable but oh so refined film.

JP, dir..: Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, act: Hidetoshi Nishijima, Toko Miura, Masaki Okada
