Eight Oscar nominations bathed Moonlight in sunshine. The film deserves all the praise and attention it is getting. It draws you in and lets you feel, laugh, cry, and crave the embrace of another human being.

We almost wrote black homosexual instead of human being. Skin colour and orientation are not irrelevant details in Chiron's life, but Moonlight does not fall into the trap of reducing him to these characteristics. In three chapters, we see a boy develop into a man in all his goodness and complexity.

In chapter one, the reserved child of a junkie mother in a deprived neighbourhood of Miami becomes close to a caring crack dealer. In the second, a teenager tries to survive in a violent environment. In the third, we see the man that he has become.

You would never guess that director Barry Jenkins based his script on a play. The images say more than words ever could. And the actors know that their material is cinematic gold. Heartrending in all its complexity and fragility.
