Fireworks Wednesday

It is not common that a film made six years ago is eventually released in cinemas after all. Why is it possible now when it wasn’t before? Over the last three years, Asghar Farhadi from Iran has become a leading director. His A Separation, one of the best films of 2011, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film three months ago and the Golden Bear in Berlin last year. In other words, distributors are counting on the fact that audiences will be curious to see the films Farhadi made before this triumph. And they should. Fireworks Wednesday is almost as good as A Separation or About Elly. The modern Greek drama plays out, for the most part, in an apartment in Teheran as the city is preparing to ring in the new (Iranian) year with fireworks and festivities. The young, kind Rouhi has been hired to clean and help out for the day. But the bride-to-be witnesses the explosion of a marital crisis. Mojdeh suspects her husband Morteza of adultery with the attractive, divorced neighbour who runs a hairdresser’s, so she sends Rouhi to spy on her. Is Mojdeh morbidly jealous, as her highly defensive husband claims, or is there more going on? Who is the real liar, manipulator, and spy? A fine script with a great dénouement, an excellent cast, and a skilled director: what more could you want? And yet there is more: the sense that a slice of modern Teheran has been unveiled.

--NL-- Asghar Farhadi uit Iran groeide de voorbije jaren uit tot een toonaangevende regisseur. Met A separation, een van de beste films van 2011, won hij drie maanden geleden de Oscar voor beste film en vorig jaar in Berlijn de Gouden Beer. Die triomfen zijn meteen ook de reden voor het uitbrengen van Fireworks Wednesday, nu zes jaar na datum. En de film mag gezien worden. Fireworks Wednesday doet niet zo heel erg onder voor A separation of About Elly. Dat wil wat zeggen. Het moderne Griekse drama speelt zich voor het grootste deel af op een appartement in een Teheran dat zich opmaakt om met veel vuurwerk en tumult aan het nieuwe (Iraanse) jaar te beginnen. De jonge, lieve Rouhi is voor een dag ingehuurd om te kuisen en te helpen. De aanstaande bruid is getuige van een fel oplaaiende huwelijkscrisis. Mojdeh verdenkt haar man Morteza van overspel met de gescheiden, aantrekkelijke buurvrouw die een kapsalon uitbaat en stuurt er Rouhi op uit om te spioneren. Is Mojdeh ziekelijk jaloers, zoals de zich heftig verwerende man beweert, of is er meer aan de hand? Wie liegt, wie manipuleert en wie spiedt? Een stevig scenario met een sterke ontknoping, uitstekende acteurs en een bekwame regisseur: meer moet dat niet zijn. Toch is er meer: het gevoel dat een stukje modern Teheran ontsluierd wordt.

--FR-- Ça n’arrive pas tous les jours qu’un film vieux de six ans sorte en salles. Pourquoi maintenant ? Ces dernières années, l’Iranien Asghar Farhadi est devenu l’un des réalisateurs qui comptent. Avec Une séparation, l’un des meilleurs films de 2011, il a décroché l’Oscar du meilleur film et l’Ours d’or à Berlin. On table donc sur la curiosité du public par rapport aux films que Farhadi a réalisés avant ce triomphe. Et cela vaut la peine. La Fête du feu n’a pas grand-chose à envier à Une séparation ou à À propos d’Elly. C’est dire. Une tragédie grecque moderne se joue presque totalement dans un appartement de Téhéran, au moment où la ville se prépare à célébrer le nouvel an (iranien) à coups de feux d’artifice. La jeune et jolie Rouhi, qui se marie bientôt, est engagée pour faire le ménage. Elle est le témoin d’une violente scène de ménage. Mojdeh soupçonne son mari Morteza de la tromper avec la séduisante voisine, divorcée, qui tient un salon de coiffure et elle envoie Rouhi l’espionner. Est-ce que Mojdeh est maladivement jalouse, comme le prétend le mari, ou est-ce qu’il y a autre chose ? Qui ment, qui manipule et qui espionne ? Un solide scénario avec un bon dénouement, d’excellents acteurs et un réalisateur compétent : que demander de plus ? En bonus, quand même : le sentiment qu’une partie du Téhéran d’aujourd’hui nous est dévoilée.
