Les beaux jours

The airport farewell scene is moving even if you don’t know the context. That is, above all, to the credit of the film’s star, Fanny Ardant. The erstwhile muse of the likes of Truffaut and Lelouch had the courage to play a character who has to reinvent herself after retirement. Now that she is no longer a dentist, Caroline suddenly has oceans of time. What can you do with all that time? Visit the Loire châteaux? Write your memoirs? Learn to be bored? She is willing to try out a club for pensioners, but has mixed feelings about the theatre workshop, the wine-tasting, and the walk along the coast at Dunkirk. Although it is an interesting subject, the director Marion Vernoux and the novelist Fanny Chesnel sidetracked this search for a new way of passing the time/a new existence in favour of a more classic story about adultery, passion, and sharing one’s life with someone. Caroline begins an affair with an IT teacher who is slightly older than her own daughter. It would have done no harm to tell us a little more about his motivations and feelings. We must settle, however, for the idea that he is a womaniser who doesn’t look at a woman’s age and isn’t too fussy. At times the film begins to drift, but stronger scenes and some telling dialogue jolt you awake.

FR ❙ La scène d’adieu dans un aéroport vous prend à la gorge même si vous ne connaissez pas le contexte. Pour cela, il faut rendre grâce à la star du film : Fanny Ardant. La muse de Truffaut et Lelouch a eu le courage de jouer un personnage qui doit se réinventer après un départ à la retraite. Depuis qu’elle n’est plus dentiste, Caroline se retrouve avec tout son temps pour elle toute seule. Par où et quoi commencer ? Apprendre à jouer aux échecs ? Visiter les châteaux de la Loire ? Ecrire ses mémoires ? Apprendre à s’ennuyer ? Elle essaie un club de retraités mais éprouve des sentiments mêlés lors du workshop de théâtre, la séance de dégustation de vins ou la promenade sur la côte près de Dunkerque. Tout aussi intéressant que cela soit, la réalisatrice Marion Vernoux et la romancière Fanny Chesnel mettent sur le côté cette recherche de nouvelles occupations et d’un nouveau sens au profit d’une intrigue plus classique avec son lot de passions, de trahisons et de questionnements sur le fait de partager sa vie avec quelqu’un. Caroline commence une liaison avec le professeur d’informatique guère plus âgé que sa propre fille. Cela aurait pu ne pas faire de mal si ce dernier accordait plus un peu de prix à ses sentiments et considérations. Mais il faut se faire à l’idée que ce n’est qu’un grand séducteur qui ne regarde pas à l’âge et pour qui tout est bon. Et par tout, on entend beaucoup...Le film tourne un peu en rond mais des moments plus forts et quelques dialogues bien envoyés réveillent le spectateur.

NL ❙ De afscheidsscène in een luchthaven grijpt ook aan als je de context niet kent. Dat is vooral te danken aan de ster van de film: Fanny Ardant. De muze van schoon volk als Truffaut en Lelouch vond de moed om een personage te spelen dat zichzelf na haar pensionering opnieuw moet uitvinden. Nu ze tandarts af is, heeft Caroline plots zeeën van tijd. Wat vang je daarmee aan? Leren schaken? De kastelen van de Loire bezoeken? Je memoires schrijven? Je leren te vervelen? Ze is bereid om een club voor gepensioneerden uit te testen, maar heeft een dubbel gevoel bij de theaterworkshop, de wijnproeverij en de wandeling langs de kust van Duinkerke. Hoewel interessant, zetten regisseur Marion Vernoux en romanschrijfster Fanny Chesnel de zoektocht naar een nieuwe invulling van de dag/het bestaan op een zijspoor ten voordele van een klassieker verhaal over overspel, passie en met iemand je leven delen. Caroline begint een affaire met de informaticaleraar die niet veel ouder is dan haar dochter. Het had geen kwaad gekund om iets meer prijs te geven over zijn beweegredenen en gevoelens. Nu moeten we het doen met het idee dat hij een grote vrouwenzot is die niet naar iemands leeftijd kijkt en voor wie alles goed is. Alles, dat is veel. Af en toe kabbelt de film wat, maar sterkere stukken en enkele rake dialogen schudden je wakker.
