More Than Honey

Widespread bee mortality is a terrifying phenomenon that has been going on for the past fifteen years. Attention to this global problem has finally increased significantly over the past few months. It’s not the production of honey that is of great concern, but the pollination of flowers, plants, fruits, and nuts. We depend on the honey bee for one third of our food. Markus Imhoof, a film director descended from a long line of beekeepers, investigates bee mortality in a documentary of which we hope (rather than think) that it has the same impact as An Inconvenient Truth. I would have recommended Imhoof to use slightly less biblical imagery, if only to avoid being branded a prophet of doom. The same is true of the colourful, threatening music. Imhoof concludes that bee mortality is not mysterious. According to him, they are not dying due to pesticides, the varroa destructor mite, antibiotics, or stress, but a combination of all those things. He says they are dying because of humans. We domesticate bees too much and (ab)use them too recklessly in the economic process. More Than Honey does not come highly recommended for the conclusion, however, but because for an hour and a half, you learn an enormous amount about bee mortality and especially also about the fascinating world of that incredible insect. The beautiful shots and extremely interesting macro images are truly eye-opening.

FR ❙ L’importante mortalité des abeilles est un phénomène angoissant en marche depuis quinze ans déjà. L’attention pour ce problème mondial s’est enfin intensifiée ces derniers mois. Il n’y a pas que l’industrie du miel qui pourrait en souffrir, mais aussi la pollinisation des fleurs, des plantes, des fruits, des céréales. Nous dépendons des abeilles mellifères pour un tiers de notre alimentation. Markus Imhoof, réalisateur issu d’une vieille famille d’apiculteurs, enquête sur la mortalité des abeilles dans un documentaire dont nous espérons (mais ne pensons pas) qu’il aura le même impact que An Inconvenient Truth. J’aurais conseillé à Imhoof d’utiliser des métaphores moins bibliques, ne serait-ce que pour éviter d’être taxé de prophète de la fin des temps. Idem pour la musique, tendancieuse et menaçante. Imhoof conclut que la mort des abeilles n’est pas un mystère. Selon lui, ce n’est pas à cause des pesticides, du varroa (acarien parasite), des antibiotiques ou du stress qu’elles meurent, mais d’une combinaison de tout cela. Elles meurent à cause de l’homme. Nous domestiquons trop violemment les abeilles et nous les intégrons imprudemment dans un processus économique. On ne vous conseille pas More Than Honey tant pour sa conclusion, mais parce qu’on y apprend beaucoup en une heure et demi sur la mort des abeilles et surtout sur le monde fascinant de ce merveilleux insecte. Les très belles images et les intéressantes vues en macro (plus aucun secret n’est en sécurité face à la caméra) ouvrent les yeux.

NL ❙ De grote bijensterfte is een angstaanjagend fenomeen dat al vijftien jaar bezig is. Het wereldprobleem kreeg de voorbije maanden eindelijk meer aandacht. Niet de honingproductie baart zorgen, maar de bestuiving van bloemen, planten, vruchten en noten. Voor een derde van ons voedsel zijn we afhankelijk van de honingbij. Opzij Lassie en Rin Tin Tin, de bij is ’s mans beste vriend! Markus Imhoof, filmregisseur en telg van een oud imkergeslacht, onderzoekt de bijensterfte in een documentaire waarvan we hopen (niet denken) dat ze dezelfde impact heeft als An inconvenient truth. Ik zou Imhoof aangeraden hebben om iets minder Bijbelse beeldspraak te hanteren, al was het maar om geen onheilsprofeet genoemd te worden. Idem voor de gekleurde, dreigende muziek. Imhoof concludeert dat de bijensterfte geen mysterie is. Bijen sterven volgens hem niet door pesticide, de varroamijt, antibiotica of stress, maar door een combinatie van dat alles. Ze sterven volgens hem door de mens. We domesticeren de bijen te fel en schakelen ze te roekeloos in in het economische proces. Niet door de conclusie is More than honey een dikke aanrader, maar omdat je op anderhalf uur heel veel bijleert over de bijensterfte en vooral over de fascinerende wereld van dat wonderlijke insect. De hele mooie plaatjes en de razend interessante macrobeelden openen de ogen.
