One world is enough, for all of us

Big crowds of people continue to vent their discontent on the streets of Bahrain, Spain, Greece, Syria, America, Egypt, and other places. All too often, these protests are silenced with varying degrees of violence. Holms is not Madrid or Manhattan. One World, a Prague-based festival that screens documentaries about human rights violations, is focused this year on unrest and protest movements in various corners of the globe.
For the fourth time, Bozar is screening a selection of the festival’s best films. In Back to the Square, Petr Lom returns to the Tahrir Square and investigates what has changed in Egypt since 25 January 2011 based on five people’s stories. One year after the historic revolution, very little has been done to satisfy the protesters’ demands. Police repression has not diminished. Barzakh is about a Chechen family that has to keep going despite not knowing the fate of one its members who has disappeared. Witnesses saw him being taken away by security forces. The Boxing Girls of Kabul (photo) follows a group of young Afghan women who are training to become international boxing stars whilst trying to ignore the strong familial and social pressure to quit sports. Each film is followed by a meeting with the director or a roundtable discussion with specialists.
