Our Idiot Brother

Poor Paul Rudd. After good performances in successful comedies like I Love You, Man, Knocked Up, and The 40 Year Old Virgin, he has finally landed another lead role, but lo and behold, the director is terrible. This film lacks a director who knows why and how to make decisions. The irony is that this kind of rotten luck is typical of Rudd’s character in the film. Ned is the kind of good egg who just doesn’t want to give up hope in humanity, despite the fact that he is doomed to lose at every turn. Dumped by his unfaithful girlfriend who doesn’t even leave him the dog, he moves in with his mother after a brief jail sentence. He can’t take it for long, so he tries his luck with his three sisters. At Liz’s (Emily Mortimer) house, he catches his brother-in-law (Steve Coogan) committing adultery. He soon gets into trouble with journalist Miranda (Elizabeth Banks). And finally, the lesbian Natalie (Zooey Deschanel) is cheating on her lover with an artist (Hugh Dancy), who promptly impregnates her. Time and again, Ned gets passed like the proverbial buck. You can’t blame the actors – a fine gang – for their characters’ disappointing superficiality. You see them going through all kinds of things, but you are left wondering why. Not why they are having the experiences, but why you are bothering to watch them. Our Idiot Brother is light, amusing, and gripping, but in idiotically small doses.

Na goeie vertolkingen in geslaagde komedies als I love you, man, Knocked up en The 40 year old virgin speelt hij eindelijk nog eens de eerste viool... en dan bakt de dirigent er toch wel niets van, zeker. Deze film mist een regisseur die knopen doorhakt en weet wat hij waarom doet. De ironie wil dat dit soort brute pech ook typisch is voor Rudds personage. Ned is het soort goedzak dat zijn geloof in de mens maar niet wil verliezen, ook al is hij daardoor gedoemd om te blijven verliezen. Gedumpt door zijn overspelige vriendin, die hem zelfs de hond niet gunt, trekt hij na een celstraf van een paar maanden kort bij zijn moeder in. Al snel klopt hij bij zijn drie zussen aan. Ten huize Liz (Emily Mortimer) betrapt hij zijn schoonbroer (Steve Coogan) op overspel. Ook met journaliste Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) krijgt hij het snel aan de stok. De lesbische Natalie (Zooey Deschanel) bedriegt haar vriendin met een kunstenaar (Hugh Dancy) die haar prompt bezwangert. Telkens krijgt Ned de zwartepiet toegespeeld. Aan de acteurs, een leuke bende, ligt het niet dat de personages teleurstellend weinig diepgang hebben. Je ziet hen van alles meemaken en je vraagt je af waarom. Niet waarom ze dat meemaken, maar waarom je ernaar zit te kijken. Our idiot brother is luchtig, grappig en aangrijpend, maar in idioot kleine dosissen.

--FR-- Pauvre Paul Rudd ! Après de bonnes interprétations dans des comédies réussies comme I Love You, Man, En cloque, mode d’emploi ou 40 ans, toujours puceau, il retrouve enfin le pupitre des premiers violons... mais le chef d’orchestre ne s’en sort pas. L’ironie veut que cette espèce de poisse à l’état brut soit typique du personnage incarné par Rudd. Ned est un brave type qui veut continuer de croire en son prochain même si cela lui vaut d’être condamné à être toujours perdant. Largué par sa copine qui l’a trompé et qui ne lui laisse même pas le chien, il se retrouve, après une peine de prison de quelques mois, chez sa mère. La situation n’étant pas tenable, il va frapper chez ses trois sœurs. Chez Liz (Emily Mortimer), il surprend son beau-frère (Steve Coogan) en plein délit d’adultère. Ça ne colle pas non plus avec Miranda (Elizabeth Banks). Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), lesbienne, trompe sa copine avec un artiste (Hugh Dancy) qui l’engrosse. À chaque fois, on rejette la faute sur Ned. Ce n’est pas à cause des acteurs - une chouette bande - si les personnages déçoivent avec leur manque de consistance. On assiste à tout ce qui leur arrive et on se demande pourquoi. Pas pourquoi ils vivent tout cela, mais pourquoi on continue de regarder. Our Idiot Brother est léger, drôle et touchant, mais seulement à doses ridiculement petites.
