The Pirates!

Captain Jack Sparrow will undoubtedly be the best-known and funniest pirate for years to come, but if we compare films instead of characters, the animated film The Pirates! comes in at least one nautical mile ahead of the Disney attraction/film Pirates of the Caribbean. For the first time since Chicken Run, Peter Lord, the founder of the renowned Aardman Studios, stood at the helm. He used computer graphics, but the structure itself is stop motion animation. The pirate ship especially is an absolute gem, but actually the whole film is a pleasure to watch. As usual with Aardman productions, technical superiority and astonishing form are coupled to a rousing atmosphere that really grips the viewer. The story is so-so, but the film’s great charm lies in the fun you have with Pirate Captain and co. on the way from A to B. Pirate Captain desperately wants to be named Pirate of the Year but his competitors Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz are merciless and his crew is painfully inept. They are terrible at stealing treasure, so their only loot is a young scientist, Charles Darwin to be precise. More than once, the film is crazy and nonsensical, but never hysterical or forced. You will have better-than-average fun with this set of would-be cutthroats. Do we see a sequel on the horizon? We certainly hope so.

--FR-- Le capitaine Jack Sparrow restera le pirate le plus connu et le plus drôle pour quelques années encore, mais s’il faut comparer non les personnages mais les films, alors c’est le film d’animation The Pirates! qui gagne de 20.000 lieues d’avance sur la fameuse adaptation d’une attraction de Disney Pirates of the Caribbean. Pour la première fois depuis Chicken Run, Peter Lord, fondateur du fameux studio Aardman, se trouve à la barre. Il utilise des images de synthèse, mais le film est construit à base d’animation image par image. Le bateau des pirates en particulier est un petit bijou, mais tout le film est un vrai plaisir. Comme il est de coutume chez Aardman, la supériorité technique et la forme bluffante vont de pair avec une ambiance entraînante qui subjugue le spectateur. Rien à reprocher à l’intrigue, mais le charme réside surtout dans les gags qui parsèment du début à la fin les aventures du Capitaine Pirate et de sa bande. Le Capitaine Pirate veut tout faire pour devenir le Pirate de l’Année, mais ses concurrents Black Bellamy et Liz Lafaucheuse sont bien plus impitoyables et son équipage est assez maladroit. Pas moyen de faucher des trésors, comme butin, ils doivent se contenter d’un jeune scientifique, Charles Darwin pour être précis. C’est souvent délirant et absurde, mais jamais hystérique ou forcé. Serait-ce là une suite que l’on voit poindre à l’horizon ? On l’espère.

--NL-- Captain Jack Sparrow zal nog wel enige jaren de bekendste en grappigste piraat zijn, maar als we geen personages maar films vergelijken wint animatiefilm The pirates! het met een zeemijl voorsprong van de Disney-attractieverfilming Pirates of the Caribbean. Voor het eerst sinds Chicken run stond Peter Lord, de oprichter van de befaamde Aardman Studios, nog eens zelf aan het roer. Hij maakte gebruik van computerbeelden maar het gebinte is stop motion-animatie. Vooral de piratenboot is een juweeltje, maar de hele film is een plezier om naar te kijken. Zoals gebruikelijk bij Aardman gaat de technische superioriteit en de verbluffende vorm gepaard met een geestdriftige ambiance die de kijker pas echt kaapt. Het verhaaltje is oké, maar de charme zit ’m vooral in de lol die je onderweg van A naar B beleeft. Pirate Captain wil er alles aan doen om piraat van het jaar te worden, maar zijn bemanning is behoorlijk onbeholpen en zijn concurrenten Black Bellamy en Cutlass Liz zijn een stuk meedogenlozer. Schatten kapen zit er niet in, ze moeten het qua buit stellen met een jonge wetenschapper, Charles Darwin om precies te zijn. Het is meer dan eens doldwaas en onzinnig, maar nooit hysterisch of geforceerd. Met deze piraten valt bovengemiddeld veel pret te beleven. Zien we daar aan de horizon een sequel opduiken? We mogen het hopen.
