In July 1995, the US and the European Union watched as a genocide raged in the heart of Europe claiming the lives of 8,000 Muslims. The Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic (Grbavica, Na putu) processed the horror of the Srebrenica massacre into a thoughtful film.

An interpreter for Dutch UN soldiers tries to save her husband and sons as Ratko Mladic's Serbian troops approach. The role of Thom Karremans, the Dutchbat commander who was forced to stand by and look on, went to the Flemish actor Johan Heldenbergh. Quo vadis, Aida? did not cash in on its Oscar nomination.
