Under the Hawthorn Tree

N’est-ce pas injuste de comparer Zhang Yimou à Zhang Yimou ? Under the Hawthorn Tree est magnifiquement filmé et contient quelques tableaux qui se sont incrustés sans trop d’effort sur mon disque dur interne. Je pense aux deux amoureux qui se trouvent chacun d’un côté de la rivière mais qui ne peuvent se rejoindre parce que l’eau est trop profonde. Je pense à ces mêmes amoureux pendant leur première promenade. Parce qu’ils n’osent - ne peuvent - pas encore se prendre la main, ils traversent le cours d’eau en tenant chacun une extrémité de la même branche. Le visage, le sourire et la joie de vivre des deux jeunes acteurs sont un ravissement. Mais malgré cela, Under the Hawthorn Tree n’égale pas Le sorgho rouge, Judou ou encore Épouses et concubines, avec lesquels le réalisateur chinois a fait fureur vers 1990. Par exemple, on ne voit pas très bien pourquoi il débarque précisément maintenant avec l’adaptation d’un best-seller décrit comme un Roméo et Juliette pendant la Révolution culturelle. Ce fameux épisode historique, radical, n’est ici rien de plus qu’un arrière-fond pittoresque. Le grand maître ne se salit pas les mains en abordant la politique. Encore moins les vôtres. Entre-temps, Zhang Yimou a déjà terminé un nouveau film, avec Christian Bale en Occidental qui est témoin de la cruauté des Japonais à Nanking en 1937. Il a certainement encore des choses à dire.

Is het fair om Zhang Yimou met Zhang Yimou te vergelijken? Under the hawthorn tree is prachtig gefilmd en bevat een paar tableaus die zich zonder veel moeite een weg baanden naar mijn interne harde schijf. Ik denk aan de twee geliefden die elk aan een kant van de rivier staan, maar niet bij elkaar kunnen komen omdat het water diep is. Ik denk aan dezelfde geliefden tijdens een van hun eerste wandelingen. Omdat ze elkaars handje nog niet durven en mogen vasthouden stappen ze over de beek terwijl ze elk een ander uiteinde van dezelfde tak vasthouden. Ook de gezichten, de glimlach en de levenslust van de twee jonge acteurs zijn uit de duizend. Máár dat maakt van Under the hawthorn tree nog geen Het rode korenveld, Ju dou of De rode lantaarns, films waarmee de Chinese regisseur rond 1990 furore maakte. Het is niet duidelijk waarom hij net nu op de proppen komt met de verfilming van een bestseller die zich laat omschrijven als Romeo en Julia tijdens de Culturele Revolutie. Die ingrijpende, historische periode is niet veel meer dan een kleurrijke achtergrond. Aan politiek maakt de grootmeester zijn handen niet vuil. Denk er het uwe van. Ondertussen heeft Zhang Yimou al een nieuwe film klaar met Christian Bale als westerling die in 1937 getuige is van de Japanse wreedheden in Nanking. Hij is zeker nog niet uitverteld.

Is it fair to compare Zhang Yimou to Zhang Yimou? Under the Hawthorn Tree is beautifully filmed and contains a number of tableaux that found their way to my hard disk without too much difficulty. I’m thinking, for example, of the two lovers who are standing on either side of the river but cannot reach one another because the water is too deep. Or of the same lovers taking one of their first walks together. Because they do not dare – and are not permitted – to hold hands yet, they step across the stream holding either end of the same branch. Moreover, the faces, smiles, and zest for life of the two young actors are one in a million. These things do not, however, make Under the Hawthorn Tree the new Red Sorghum, Ju Dou, or Raise the Red Lantern, the Chinese director’s films that caused such furore around 1990. It is not entirely clear why exactly he is now presenting this film adaptation of a best seller described as Romeo and Juliet during the Cultural Revolution. That infamous, radical period of history is not much more than a colourful backdrop to the film. The master steers clear of politics. You can draw your own conclusions. Incidentally, Zhang Yimou has already finished his next new film, starring Christian Bale as a westerner who witnesses the Japanese atrocities in Nanjing in 1937. Clearly, he still has a lot more to say.
