Whoever’s up for an evening full of soul and blues sounds, absolutely needs to go to VUB’s KultuurKaffee on 7 March, where young talents Billie Kawende and Aissata Djiby & The Fujirama Blues Trio will be performing live on stage. They each have their own different influences and style, adding up perfectly to create the variety and atmosphere an evening like this needs.

Introducing the ladies
Raised in a musical family, Billie Kawende as a little girl had already found her passion. Inspired by some of the greatest soul and jazz artists, such as Whitney Houston and Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Kawende sings and brings the people a mixture of her own songs and covers, letting her African roots and influences - that also include R&B, hip hop, funk, and gospel - shine through. Today, she frequently performs in a variety of venues, such as Het Depot in Leuven or Vooruit in Ghent, tearing the place up. She also started singing with AKS (Addicted Kru Sound), a DJ crew producing a mixture of breakbeat, drum ‘n’ bass, funk, dubstep and electro.

She’s just about to turn 18, but talent has no age. Aissata Djiby, daughter of a Senegalese father and a Belgian mother, already released her first album, It’s Time To Go Now, in 2011 and the album received nothing but praise from music critics. Back when she was a little kid, she invented random melodies in a made-up language of her own. By the time she became a teenager, Aissata already had quite an inventory of her own songs. It didn’t take long before she was performing on stage alongside three other musicians, forming Aissata Djiby & The Fujirama Blues Trio, giving the public smooth blues either written by themselves or covered from classics. Aissata is currently working on her second album, which will be released around spring 2013.
