“Everything online is censored,” Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, who is also an actor and stand-up comedian, said before he released his second album. And yet, he loves the internet very much.

Because the Internet hip hop (Caroline/Universal)

During the weeks preceding the release of the concept album Because the Internet, he organised public performance sessions in American cities that he would announce a few hours beforehand via tweets to his one million plus following. And he let us know how he felt via Instagram. And this record, which aims to present how the internet influences our lives, has an accompanying script (check becausetheinter.net). Internet culture has definitely had a greater impact on Bino’s musical zapping that switches quickly from smooth to gritty to jazzy, from R&B to dubby than it has on the feelings underlying all his songs: isolation, uncertainty, and his position as an outsider in the hip-hop scene – “the only black kid at a Sufjan (Stevens) concert,” he raps on “Firefly”. He prefers making corny jokes to starting a riot, being a nerd to being macho. The album is occasionally a little too rambling to follow, but you just try to prove him wrong when he says that Because the Internet is more than just an audio experience.
