Disclosure: watertight beats

The action radius of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence has long expanded beyond the London club scene. Awaiting the imminent release of their debut, they have made a pan-European hit with the scintillating song “White Noise”, a collaboration with that other hip, London-based duo AlunaGeorge. In the summer of 2010, the brothers – currently 17 and 20 years old – had a relatively low-profile debut with the club track “Offline Dexterity”, but the singles “Flow” and “Tenderly” sustained the hype and the duo’s frenetic rhythms were embraced both on and off the dance floor. Not only did they perform as the warm-up act to SBTRKT and Hot Chip, last autumn the single “Latch” hit the charts, while trendy party people were going nuts to their remix version of Jessie Ware’s “Running”. In fact, “White Noise” is an excellent example of how the brothers repeatedly manage to start from a strict, minimalist basic structure – inspired by the UK garage and house of the early 1990s – and develop it into a refined and watertight production, which also sounds fresh and lively. This time, a penetrating staccato melody forms the whirling foundation of bleeps on which singer Aluna Francis pitches her steamy vocal line, after which the brothers let loose in their characteristic mist of reverb and delay.
Next week, they are coming to the AB Club – the concert has been sold out for ages – to give us a foretaste of their debut album due to be released in May. After the performance, they will take their places at the DJ tables at Mr Wong, which is hosting the official after party. A gesture to the blitz clubbers-cum-night owls who didn’t manage to score a concert ticket.
