MGMT, Ariel Pink, Tame Impala, Ty Segall: 1960s psychedelic (garage) pop is totally hip again. Foxygen, a very young duo seasoned to perfection under the Californian sun, presents a tonal palette that flashes you back to 1967 and The Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request and The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, with additional references to The Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, and Syd Barrett.

We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic pop (Jagjaguwar)

The influences are sometimes very clear: “In the Darkness” opens like a lost Beatles track from their Magical Mystery Tour, “On the Blue Mountain” blends The Stones’ “Under My Thumb” and Elvis’s “Suspicious Minds”. You might easily accuse Foxygen of profound epigonism, but fortunately, the recognisable notes reveal fine pop songs. That is in part thanks to producer Richard Swift, the keyboardist of The Shins, who gives the frantic guitars and cooing organs their lustre. The fragrant “San Francisco” makes us dream of summer.
