These four London lads are hot. On their debut album they mix their electronic dubstep with an unashamedly tuneful dance-pop sound.

Evolution Theory dubstep/electro/rock (Polydor/Universal)

With a sixth sense for the theatrical and, above all, an exceptionally persuasive live show, what they offer is exactly what is incredibly popular right now with a growing teenage public looking for new thrills and climaxes. At times they sound like a rock group version of Skrillex. Dubstep patterns are balanced by drum ‘n’ bass, grime, and industrial rock. The soulful vocals are a constant, but are occasionally a bit predictable. The melancholy title track, with its sombre, claustrophobic UK garage raps, is an oasis of good taste amid anthems that often sound too calculated to thrill away from the context of live performance. Which takes nothing away from the fact that tracks like “Another Day” and “Praying for Silence” fire particularly effective adrenaline cannonballs. And you have to hand it to Modestep for throwing a whole range of genres into the mix over the two years spent producing this debut effort without losing their distinctive character. Clever, and great fun at festivals, but tiring.
