Party Tip: Le Tigre at Mr Wong

The list of bands that has let their singles be adapted by Thibaut Berland is getting quite long; groups ranging from the Australian Van She and the hip British birds Metronomy to Belgium’s pride Aeroplane and recently also the Canadian Chromeo. Berland has also been in demand among his countrymen: Justice, Sébastien Tellier, and Air are huge fans of Breakbot’s irresistible disco funk.

For the past five years, he has been working on his own songs under that name, but his first full album was only completed last month. There are a few tracks on By Your Side that Breakbot fans will probably already know, but there is also a batch of new material, including the excellent “One Out of Two”. Breakbot is not a great singer and so he calls in artists like Irfane, who previously provided vocals for the fantastically sunny “Baby I’m Yours”. In 2010, the track was picked up by the Ed Banger label, which was already incredibly popular at the time. The upbeat disco tunes stick out among the many raw electro beats that artists (Justice, Mr. Oizo, Krazy Baldhead, etc.) produce on the label. Think of Toto going on a spree with The Jackson 5. Fortunately, the kitsch level maintains the right balance and his tracks will take you happily to the dance floor. So we expect nothing less than a smooth party on Friday at Mr Wong.
