Party Tip: Rayko & Nelue

Disco is immune to the ravages of time, occasionally undergoing a thorough facelift and reappearing good as new. A few years ago, people went nuts for the antics of Duck Sauce, who gleefully revived Boney M (that’s almost three years ago already!), while those looking for something a bit more advanced swore by the nu-disco or Balearic scene that was exploding at the time. That rage has also passed, but as always, the quality stuck.
The Spaniard Rayko was always a big fan of 1970s and ’80s disco, boogie, and rock, and decided to make edits in which he set famous and lesser-known songs to a heavier and more contemporary groove. His breakthrough came with the remix “Broadway”, a song by Candi “You Got the Love” Staton. Recently, his eye fell on Michael Jackson and Snap, who were also given an update.
You will find a collection of his work on Dragon Soul, the album he released this year featuring remixes of Womack & Womack, D Train, and other artists. His career only started in 2008, but he now appears the world over. And when he isn’t abroad, he hangs out at the Moroder Sound Club in Madrid, where he is a resident DJ along with colleague Nelue. In other words, a touch of Madrid in Brussels. Hopefully they will bring some sun.
Rayko & Nelue 1/12, 22.00, €10, Mr Wong, Zwarte Lievevrouwstraat 10 rue de la Vierge Noire, Brussel/Bruxelles, www.mrwong.be
