Raps and beats from... Poland

What about rap and hip hop from Poland? To some readers that might sound as likely as techno from Uzbekistan or sixties psychedelic music from Iran, but that also exists. In Magasin 4, two bands and a DJ are coming to Brussels for an evening of Polish rhymes and beats. Rapper Sanzio will provide a Belgian touch.

Molesta Ewenement, the main act of the night, is famous in its native land. Launched in 1994 by the duo Piotr Wiecławski and Paweł Włodkowski – then still called Mistic Molesta – the now three-member band boasts its own completely individual sound. Obviously their language is one reason for that: the three are confirmed Polish-language rappers. But the frequent use of electronically generated violins that soften the sharp-edged beats contribute to a specific tonal palette.
The sound of the one-man project Radar is much darker. The subjects he raps about, such as problems in rough districts or pressing unemployment, are grimmer in nature. Radar debuted last year with the arbitrarily entitled First. This is his first performance in Brussels.
While DJ Efate is coming to string the various acts together with – Polish? – drum ‘n’ bass, Namur-based Sanzio will warm up the crowd. On his debut, Le client est roi, this popular guest at MC Battles – he won the very first Brussels Rap Contest in 2010 – frankly denounces social injustice.
