Soledad was born 10 years ago out of a passion for Ástor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo. Since then the quintet has expanded its sound palette to include classical, Latin jazz, and bossa nova, with adventurous covers of the music of, among others, Stravinsky, Devreese, and Gismonti.

Soledad Plays Soledad
tango/latin (Soledad Productions/Tym Records)

And they haven’t limited themselves to covers: seven of the twelve tracks on their fifth album, Soledad Plays Soledad, are their own compositions, drawing on an explosive mix of the genres already mentioned. “Rebound” is a groovy track, on the frontiers of Latin jazz and tango, with a fine guitar riff, robust congas, and a delightfully swinging piano. For their interpretation of “Por toda minha vida”, a bossa nova classic by Tom Jobim, Soledad invited Maurane to do the singing. “Frevo” is another swinging track, on which the instruments engage in a dialogue, creating a blend of Brazilian frevo and up-tempo tango. Soledad has no qualms about suddenly changing rhythm or starting to rock, as on “Baile Funk”, a fairly tranquil track that from time to time turns a lot more intense. Chamber music as you have never heard it before, with moments of calm listening succeeded by pieces you just can’t sit out, as the rhythms propel you out of your seat!
