“How long has it been since you fell in love with a boy like me”, the View gets going, slightly wonkily, but especially self-assuredly and excitedly. Unfortunately, the rest of their material only sporadically matches their early enthusiasm.

Cheeky for a Reason rock (Cooking Vinyl)

The Scottish foursome are sometimes compared to the Arctic Monkeys and the Libertines because of their sprightliness, but when we heard singer Kyle Falconer describe this new album as “Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours performed by The Clash”, we couldn’t help but raise our eyebrows. The band members come into their element when they manage to ally their consciously rickety sound, which is sometimes punkie and sometimes folkie, with a melody that sticks around in your mind. For example, in the opener “How Long” or in “Bullet”, riotous tracks that are a great match for a slightly arrogant delivery of an impassioned singer and band. Compositionally, the View are no better than anyone else, and too often they fall into routine song structures. One thing is certain: they are living proof that joy in life and self-confidence will get you a very long way.
