To understand the symbolism behind Wild Boar & Bull Brass Band, you have to delve into some Brussels mythology. The wild boar has six heads and escaped from the Zoniënwoud/Forêt de Soignes to provide the Parvis in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles with bellowing wind instruments, dark jazz, and tight hip-hop beats.

Consume This hip hop (Naff Rekordz)

Once there, the wild boar found itself face to face with an edgy bull who replied to that energetic blast with an inexhaustible flow of words. The conflict got out of hand, and so we find ourselves in the “Brass Wars”, a mix of hip hop, brass, and funk. The rapper Herb Cells and the trombonist Sébastien Van Hoey, the heroes of the story, met each other in 2006; one year later, they had twelve songs ready to be recorded – with five other musicians (four wind instruments, bass, and drums) – for a debut album. The combination of rap and a brass band is unusual in hip hop. WBBbb drew inspiration from hip-hoppers like US3, the Roots, and the Herbaliser, as well as from Youngblood Brass Band, Tom Waits, Steve Coleman, and...Rage Against the Machine! Their second album, Consume This, once more offers a lively mix of obscure funk, razor-sharp rhymes, menacing wind, and meaty beats.
