Balthazar

Est-ce parce que le chanteur, claviériste et compositeur Maarten Devoldere habite aujourd’hui à Bruxelles que nous apprécions tant le nouvel album de Balthazar ? Ça aurait pu, mais c’est surtout parce que le groupe aux racines courtraisiennes signe là une somptueuse collection de chansons sur la beauté des inconvénients. Moins électrique que le premier opus, Rats livre ses charmes pop rock à petites doses, ce qui le rend d’autant plus addictif. Le 16 février prochain, le quintette constituera sans conteste l’un des grands moments des [PIAS] Nites à Tour & Taxis.

Dan Deacon

One of the highlights of the last concert year was the hilarious, thrilling, and yet also moving and committed show by electronica wizard Dan Deacon in the Rotonde at the Botanique. Shortly before, he also confessed to his voracious appetite for AGENDA. This American with a preference for big 1980s glasses and Grateful Dead T-shirts started his career as a hedonistic provider of ecstatic “partytronica”, but has gradually been broadening his tonal range and deepening his expressiveness. His recent album, America, is a beautiful, moving tribute to his contested homeland, which perfectly allies scintillating electronica and orchestral grandeur. Be immersed by the euphoric mantras of this eccentric geek who has transformed himself into an gentle Captain America, and the winter will fly by.

Jessie Ware
Devotion PMR/Universal, €16,50
Jessie Ware is everywhere these days – she even found her way to our cover! –, and she has her excellent debut album to thank for it. On Devotion the South Londoner combines sensual, soulful vocals and contemporary, refined electronica. The diva in a nutshell brought the AB Club to ecstasy a couple of weeks ago, and she is coming back to the big hall on 30 March. A pop star, in the classic sense, like Annie Lennox, Sade, or Whitney – these are her own words, but she’ll get no argument from us!

Grizzly Bear
Shields Warp/V2, €14,50 (CD)/€20,50 (LP)
This year, another load of progressive pop from Brooklyn blew over The Pond, with great releases by Yeasayer, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective. But the cake was taken – and devoured – by Grizzly Bear, whose album Shields is arguably their boldest record yet. The chamber pop collective’s wonderful harmonies, barbed-wire bound guitars, and stunning melodies also found their way to the Ancienne Belgique, where the group presented its album with great verve. Pop won’t get more audacious than this.

Montevideo
Personal Space EMI, €13
« Chansons à l’écriture soignée, mélodies pétries dans la musique électronique et embardées imaginées à la charnière de la new-wave et du post-punk ». Nous saluions il y a peu le retour flamboyant de Montevideo. Avec Personal Space, album ambitieux façonné à New York et finalisé à Paris, Jean Waterlot et ses comparses ont repris leur place dans le peloton de tête de la scène pop rock belge. On retrouvera bientôt la formation bruxelloise dans ces pages, à l’occasion de son passage à l’AB annoncé pour début mars.

Wat twee weken bungalowen in de Ardennen al met een mens kan doen: Bram Van Parys alias The Bony King of Nowhere ging afgelopen zomer in retraite in het onooglijke Mirwart en kwam naar buiten met een onthutsend mooi, titelloos album – zijn derde. Over zijn wedervaren in de Waalse bossen vertelt de troubadour met de melancholische stem volgende week in AGENDA naar aanleiding van zijn concert in Strombeek. Wedden dat zijn album daarna de soundtrack van uw barre wintermaanden wordt? Wij bevelen het alvast warm aan.
