Although Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has been active as a choreographer and dancer for more than thirty years now, both the quality and the quantity of her work remain highly impressive. At the start of September, her Rosas company was at both Het Theaterfestival, with Vortex Temporum, and the Kaaitheater, with the equally well received Verklärte Nacht. In 2002, in between creating group pieces and choreographies for other dancers, De Keersmaeker found time for a solo that she performed herself. Once was her first solo since Violin Phase back in 1982: it was a simple, personal, committed, intimate duet between dance and the music of Joan Baez in Concert, Part 2, a live 1960s recording by the US protest singer. Now, at the Kaaitheater, she presents a sequel, entitled Twice. Following her recent shows Cesena, 3Abschied, and The Song, De Keersmaeker has joined forces with the Rosas dancer and musician Carlos Garbin. Together, they explore the direct relationships between dance and song and between performance and concert. We can’t say much more right now, as this small-scale project is being presented relatively discreetly and without much commentary by Rosas. It will, in any case, be another simple show with room for experimentation – under the motto “My dancing is my singing, my singing is my dancing.”
