The Japanese conceptual artist On Kawara is fascinated by the passage of time. The results have included a series of black and white paintings with data. His best-known work is One Million Years, which is made up of two books, Past and Future, in which the artist looks back a million years and forward a million years in time via a list of years.

Since 1993, live readings have been held all over the world, in each of which a man and a woman in a glass box take turns to read out a number of years over half an hour. The result, for both participants and observers, is an exceptional, meditative experience. Bozar hosted a series of those participatory readings up to 14 July; they were such a big success that they are being followed by a new series from 3 to 8 September. If you fancy spending a half-hour reading yourself, you can sign up at www.bozar.be.
