Boxing and hip hop are akin in certain ways – speed and precision are vital in both, quite apart from the range of movements and the sheer energy involved. But the addition of a classical string quartet to the mix is more surprising.

The choreographer Mourad Merzouki set up Boxe Boxe back in 2010, bringing together, with a sense of humour, punches and breaks to the sounds of tunes by Schubert. And now he is making his return to the ring with some dancers from Brazil.

The duos performed in Boxe Boxe Brasil alternate fusion and combat, with a punchball at the heart of some circus-like numbers, while the strings support the bodies as they soar, with a nostalgic grace, drawing on the works of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla.
