He can't hit a bog with his own piss, or his own shit for that matter, but he can write. Tonight, Sterling Books is hosting an evening with Kevin Maher, a writer and critic for the Times, whose acclaimed debut novel The Fields – published by Little, Brown earlier this year – undertakes a journey to Dublin in the 1980s. The Guardian concluded: “Maher understands the comic power both of fine detail and wild exaggeration. Thrust into extremity, Jim [Finnegan, the 13-year-old protagonist] retains that childlike combination of innocence and enthusiasm that can make even daily existence seem larger-than-life: The Fields glows larger still. Fresh, beguiling and laugh-out-loud funny on every page, this must be the most enjoyable Irish novel since Skippy Dies.” At 7 pm, Kevin Maher will be reading (or trying to read) from his book and signing copies, while you’re enjoying a drink and a good time.

25/10, 19.00, Sterling Books, Wolvengracht 38 rue du Fossé aux Loups, Brussel/Bruxelles, www.sterlingbooks.be
