Adieu Berthe

Accrochez-vous : les frères Bruno et Denis Podalydès ont découvert la fonction SMS de leur téléphone mobile. Ils l’utilisent pour remplir un quart de leur dernier film. Qu’est-ce que ça donnera quand, d’ici quatre ou cinq ans, ils découvriront la tablette numérique... Dans Bancs publics, ils détournaient des situations de tous les jours au bureau ou dans un magasin de bricolage de façon à les rendre drôles, attendrissantes, bizarres ou poétiques. Le résultat était un film amusant pour les vacances. Avec Adieu Berthe, ils veulent aussi faire pouffer de rire les spectateurs avec les petits travers et les particularités de personnages en pleine galère. Une petite touche de magie est censée apporter au film un cachet particulier. On pourrait y voir une ode aux prestidigitateurs. Lors de la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, la presse française a accueilli Adieu Berthe avec enthousiasme, y voyant une comédie émouvante et intelligente. J’y ai vu moi un névrosé égocentrique qui n’est pas encore en état de régler convenablement l’enterrement de sa grand-mère oubliée et qui tient maladroitement la jambe à deux femmes en même temps. Armand, pharmacien, fantasme avec sa femme sur une séparation sans douleur et entretient en même temps une relation passionnée via SMS avec sa maîtresse. Peut-être est-ce drôle si on se reconnaît dans ce dadais aux problèmes bourgeois. Personnellement, sa pitoyable crise de la cinquantaine ne m’intéresse pas. Et beaucoup de gags sont téléphonés, par-dessus le marché !

Wat gaat dat geven als ze binnen een jaar of vijf de tablet-pc ontdekken? In Bancs publics bogen ze alledaagse situaties op kantoor of in de winkel voor doe-het-zelvers zo om dat ze grappig, vertederend, bizar of poëtisch werden. Het resultaat was een amusante zomerfilm. Ook met Adieu Berthe willen ze de toeschouwer doen gniffelen met de kleine kanten en de eigenaardigheden van de ploeterende mens. Een vleugje magie moet de film een eigen cachet geven. Je zou er een ode aan de goochelaars in kunnen zien. De Franse pers zag er een ontroerende, intelligente komedie in en onthaalde Adieu Berthe tijdens de Quinzaine des Réalisateurs enthousiast. Ik zag een egocentrische neuroot die nog niet in staat is om de begrafenis van zijn vergeten grootmoeder deftig te regelen en op klunzige wijze twee vrouwen tegelijk aan de praat houdt. Apotheker Armand fantaseert met zijn echtgenote over de pijnloze scheiding en heeft ondertussen een passionele sms-relatie met zijn vriendin. Misschien is het grappig als u zich herkent in de schlemiel met bourgeoisproblemen. Mij interesseert zijn meelijwekkende midlifecrisis niet. Op de koop toe zijn veel grappen getelefoneerd.

We dread to think what will happen when they discover the tablet in four or five years. In Bancs publics they adapted everyday situations at the office or at DIY stores to make them funny, endearing, bizarre, or poetic. The result was an amusing summer film. Adieu Berthe is also aimed to make audiences chuckle at the little shortcomings and vicissitudes of human life. A spot of magic is supposed to give the film its own cachet. You could see it as an ode to magicians. The French press responded to Adieu Berthe – screened during the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs – enthusiastically, and saw it as a moving, intelligent comedy. I only saw an egocentric neurotic who is incapable of organising his neglected and forgotten grandmother’s funeral and is blunderingly stringing two women along. Pharmacist Armand and his wife fantasise about a painless divorce. Meanwhile he has a passionate SMS relationship with his girlfriend. This film might be funny if you can identify with the schlemiel and his bourgeois problems, but his pitiful midlife crisis is of no interest to me. And to add insult to injury, a lot of the jokes are pretty predictable.
