Albert Nobbs

Iron Lady Meryl Streep is niet de enige zestigplusser die in aanmerking komt voor de Oscar voor beste actrice. Ook generatiegenote Glenn Close is genomineerd. De voorbije jaren blonk de actrice uit Fatal attraction en Dangerous liaisons vooral op het kleine scherm uit: in de schitterende tv-serie Damages. Om Albert Nobbs van de grond te krijgen, bewoog Close hemel en aarde. Na het zien van de film begrijp je wel waarom. De hoofdrol staat een actrice toe te demonstreren hoe goed ze kan acteren. In het Ierland van de late negentiende eeuw werkt Albert Nobbs als butler in een hotel voor de beau monde. Niemand vermoedt dat de eigenaardige, perfectionistische man die de sociale contacten schuwt, eigenlijk een vrouw is. Een vrouw die zich op jonge leeftijd is beginnen voordoen als man omdat het haar enige hoop was op een fatsoenlijk leven. Regisseur Rodrigo García (Mother and child) gaat daar helaas niet dieper op in. Nobbs komt tot haar verbijstering een lotgenote tegen die er zelfs in geslaagd is om te trouwen. Aangemoedigd door zijn/haar geluk maakt Nobbs een dienstmeid (Mia Wasikowska) het hof. De tragiek van iemand die zichzelf een leven lang weggecijferd heeft komt niet uit de verf. De vertolking van Close is merkwaardig. Door de bolhoed lijkt ze uit een schilderij van Magritte gestapt. Goed kostuumdrama, maar niet uitzonderlijk.

Meryl Streep en Dame de fer n’est pas la seule femme de plus de 60 ans à être dans la course pour l’Oscar de la meilleure actrice. Glenn Close, de la même génération, est elle aussi nominée. Ces dernières années, l’actrice des Liaisons dangereuses a surtout brillé au petit écran, dans l’excellente série Damages. Close a remué ciel et terre pour qu’Albert Nobbs voie le jour. Après avoir vu le film, on comprend bien pourquoi : le rôle principal permet à une actrice de montrer à quel point elle sait bien jouer. En Irlande, à la fin du XIX^e siècle, Albert Nobbs travaille comme majordome dans un hôtel de la haute. Personne ne se doute que cet homme perfectionniste et un peu bizarre, qui évite les contacts sociaux, est en fait une femme. Une femme qui a commencé très jeune à se faire passer pour un homme parce que c’était son seul espoir d’avoir une vie décente. Le réalisateur Rodrigo García (Mother and Child) ne va hélas pas plus loin que ça. À sa grande stupéfaction, Nobbs rencontre une personne dans la même situation qui a même réussi à se marier. Encouragé(e) par sa chance, Nobbs fait la cour à une servante (Mia Wasikowska). Le côté tragique d’une vie passée à faire abstraction de soi n’est pas mis en évidence. L’interprétation de Glenn Close - avec son chapeau melon, on dirait qu’elle s’est échappée d’un tableau de Magritte - est remarquable. Un bon drame en costumes, mais pas exceptionnel.

Iron Lady Meryl Streep is not the only over-sixty in the running for the Oscar for Best Actress. Her contemporary Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons) has also been nominated. In recent years, she excelled especially on the small screen (Damages). Close moved heaven and earth to get Albert Nobbs off the ground. And after seeing the film, you can understand why. The lead role is an excellent opportunity for an actress to demonstrate her talent. In late 19^th century Ireland, Albert Nobbs works as a butler in a hotel for the Beau Monde. Nobody suspects that the peculiar, perfectionistic man who avoids social contact is actually a woman. A woman who began to dress as a man at an early age because it was her only hope for a decent life. Unfortunately, director Rodrigo García (Mother and Child) doesn’t explore the theme more deeply. To her great surprise, Nobbs encounters a woman in similar circumstances, but one who has managed to marry. Encouraged by his/her happiness, Nobbs starts courting a maid (Mia Wasikowska). The tragedy of someone who has spent a lifetime effacing herself is barely highlighted. Close’s performance, however, is remarkable. In her bowler hat, she looks as though she might have stepped out of a Magritte painting. Good, but not exceptional.
