Black Gold

FR Dans les années 80, le réalisateur français Jean-Jacques Annaud s’est fait connaître avec trois films internationaux et spectaculaires : La Guerre du feu (une épopée préhistorique), Le Nom de la rose (d’après le livre d’Umberto Eco) et L’Ours (filmé en adoptant le point de vue d’un ours). Après ces trois coups dans le mille, Annaud ne s’est pas reposé sur ses lauriers et a mis en boîte d’autres grosses productions. Mais il n’y a plus eu de chefs-d’œuvre à voir à tout prix. Black Gold ne fait pas exception. Tous les fans de fresques épiques tournées dans les plus belles dunes du désert d’Arabie s’y précipiteront. Annaud a
pris son temps et a pu disposer de 7.000 costumes faits main, de 400 fusils, de 250 épées, de 10.000 chameaux, de 20.000 figurants et de 2.000 chevaux. Dans les années 30, des Américains découvrent du pétrole dans Le Cercle d’Or, une zone du désert proclamée neutre par deux chefs opposés à l’issue d’un conflit sanglant. L’opportuniste émir Nesib (Antonio Banderas) veut moderniser son territoire avec l’argent du pétrole. Le sultan conservateur Amar (Mark Strong) n’est pas d’accord. Une nouvelle guerre est inévitable, ce qui met le prince Auda (Tahar Rahim) dans une situation délicate : Amar est son père, Nesib est le père de sa ravissante épouse, la princesse Leyla.

Annaud is na die hattrick niet op zijn lauweren gaan rusten en bracht nog meer groots opgezette producties tot een goed einde. Maar kleppers die je te allen prijze moest gezien hebben, zaten daar niet meer tussen. Black gold is daar geen uitzondering op. Alleen fans van epische films in de mooiste zandduinen die de Arabische woestijnen te bieden hebben, mogen dit niet missen. Annaud heeft er zich niet rap rap van willen afmaken en kon beschikken over 7.000 handgemaakte kostuums, 400 geweren, 250 zwaarden, 10.000 kamelen, 20.000 figuranten en 2.000 paarden. In de jaren 1930 ontdekken Amerikanen olie in de Gouden Gordel, een stuk woestijn dat twee rivaliserende leiders na een bloedig conflict tot niemandsland hebben uitgeroepen. De opportunistische Emir Nesib (Antonio Banderas) wil met het oliegeld zijn gebied moderniseren. De conservatieve Sultan Amar (Mark Strong) wil daar niet van weten. Een nieuwe oorlog is onvermijdelijk. Dat brengt prins Auda (Tahar Rahim) in een lastig parket. Amar is zijn vader. Nesib is de vader van zijn bloedmooie vrouw, prinses Leyla.

EN The French director Jean-Jacques Annaud made his name back in the 1980s with three spectacular international

films: Quest for Fire (a prehistoric epic), In the Name of the Rose (based on the book by Umberto Eco), and The Bear (filmed from the point of view of the bear). After that hat-trick, Annaud didn’t rest on his laurels: he went on to make a number of other successful large-scale films – but none of them were really must-see classics. And neither is Black Gold. It is essential viewing only for fans of epic films shot in the finest sand dunes the Arabian desert has to offer. Annaud certainly couldn’t be accused of just dashing the film off: he had more than 7,000 handmade costumes, 400 guns, 250 swords, 10,000 camels, 20,000 extras, and 2,000 horses at his disposal. We find ourselves in the 1930s, when some Americans discover oil in the Golden Belt, an area of desert that two rival leaders have declared to be no man’s land in the wake of a bloody conflict. The opportunistic Emir Nesib (Antonio Banderas) wants to use the oil money to modernise his region. The conservative Sultan Amar (Mark Strong) will have none of it. A new war is inevitable. So Prince Auda (Tahar Rahim) is faced with an awkward predicament: Amar is his father, while Nesib is the father of his beautiful wife, Princess Leyla.
