The Broken Circle Breakdown

Felix Van Groeningen not only conquered Flanders with The Misfortunates, the film was also extremely successful internationally. Actor and director Johan Heldenbergh outdid himself with the play The Broken Circle Breakdown Featuring The Cover-ups of Alabama. Would Van Groeningen’s adaptation of the play thus automatically produce a masterpiece? Film is not an exact science. The film is a tragedy of fate with a number of utterly heart-rending scenes, but never wallows in sentimentality. The love between tattoo artist Elise and Flemish cowboy Didier would make anyone green with envy. But when their daughter Maybelle dies, their love is tested unbearably. The romantic atheist and sober believer react completely differently. She seeks comfort, while he gets lost in rage. In the theatre production, the live bluegrass music has a healing, but also overwhelming and relativising effect. From sheer necessity, the number of songs in the film was reduced (to avoid it becoming a musical), resulting in a tension in the delicate and complex balance between grand ideas (about life, God, stem cell research, and religion), melodrama, and music. There are moments when The Broken Circle Breakdown is extremely emotionally and/or intellectually intense. The viewers are not spared, and that is as it should be.

Met het toneelstuk The broken circle breakdown featuring The Cover-ups of Alabama overtrof acteur en regisseur Johan Heldenbergh zichzelf. Wanneer Van Groeningen het stuk verfilmt, volgt daar dan automatisch een meesterwerk uit? Film is geen wiskunde. The broken circle breakdown is een noodlotsdrama geworden met een aantal scènes die door merg en been gaan, ook al is Van Groeningen zo kies om niet in het sentiment te zwelgen. De liefde tussen tattooartieste Elise (Veerle Baetens) en de Vlaamse cowboy Didier (Heldenbergh) is om jaloers op te zijn. Maar ze wordt onnoembaar zwaar beproefd wanneer hun dochter Maybelle sterft. De romantische atheïst en de nuchtere gelovige reageren totaal verschillend. Zij zoekt troost, hij verliest zich in woede. In het theaterstuk heeft de bluegrassmuziek een helend, tegelijk overweldigend en relativerend effect. In de film werd het aantal nummers noodgedwongen teruggeschroefd waardoor het broze en complexe evenwicht tussen grote ideeën (over het leven, God, stamcelonderzoek en religie), melodrama en muziek onder druk komt te staan. Daartegenover staan niet alleen sterke vertolkingen, The broken circle breakdown is een paar keer emotioneel en/of intellectueel zeer intens. De toeschouwer wordt niet gespaard en zo hoort het.

--FR-- Avec De Helaasheid der dingen/La Merditude des choses, Felix Van Groeningen a conquis la Flandre et fait bonne impression au niveau international. Avec la pièce The Broken Circle Breakdown Featuring The Cover-ups of Alabama, l’acteur Johan Heldenbergh s’est surpassé. Lorsque FG adapte The BCB, est-ce que ça donne automatiquement un chef-d’œuvre ? C’est devenu un drame de la fatalité, avec une série de scènes qui vous touchent au plus profond, même si Van Groeningen est assez subtil pour ne pas se vautrer dans le sentimental. L’amour entre Elise, artiste du tatouage, et Dider, cow-boy flamand, est rudement mis à l’épreuve lors de la mort de leur fille Maybelle. L’athée romantique et la croyante plus posée réagissent de manière totalement différente. Elle cherche le réconfort, lui se perd dans la colère. Dans la pièce, la musique bluegrass live avait un effet curatif. Dans le film, le nombre de morceaux a été réduit (ça ne devait pas devenir une comédie musicale), ce qui fait que l’équilibre fragile et complexe entre les grandes idées (sur la vie, Dieu, la recherche sur les cellules souches...), le mélodrame et la musique est mis à mal. Par contre, les interprétations impressionnent et The Broken Circle Breakdown est plus d’une fois intense au niveau émotionnel et/ou intellectuel. Le spectateur n’est pas épargné et c’est très bien comme ça.
