The Cabin in the Woods

Five school kids dive headlong into their weekend at a remote cabin in the woods. After their first wild night, they discover a nasty surprise in the basement. Instead of partying, they find themselves fighting for their lives. If you think you can guess how it ends, you’re wrong. Horror films that consciously play with the clichés of horror films have become a cliché themselves. But The Cabin in the Woods plays with the clichés, codes, strengths, and weaknesses of the horror film in a particularly original way, with good ideas, love for the genre, and anger at the questionable direction the genre took with Saw and other torture porn. In this respect, it was the perfect choice as a closing film for the thirtieth edition of the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film. It is the Scream of the 2010s: clever, but not so clever that it gets boring, funny, but not at the expense of the story, chilling, but not too scary to deter the general public. The dialogue is an asset, which makes a nice change. And when it gets exciting, it’s really exciting. You wouldn’t have guessed that Drew Goddard, who won his spurs as a writer and producer on Lost and Cloverfield, is a first-time director. He was assisted by Joss Whedon (script, production) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Avengers fame. The Cabin in the Woods doesn’t walk the beaten path.

Vijf scholieren zetten hun weekend in een verlaten blokhut in de bossen stevig in. Na een eerste wilde nacht wacht hen in de kelder een onaangename verrassing. In plaats van te feesten mogen ze vechten voor hun leven. Wie denkt te weten hoe dit afloopt, zit ernaast. Horrorfilms waarin doelbewust gespeeld wordt met clichés van de horrorfilm zijn zelf een cliché geworden. Maar in The cabin in the woods wordt dat spel met de clichés, de codes, de sterktes en zwaktes van de horrorfilm gespeeld met uitzonderlijk veel originaliteit, goede ideeën, liefde voor het genre én boosheid om de bedenkelijke richting die het genre insloeg met Saw en andere torture porn. In dat opzicht was het gewoon de perfecte slotfilm voor de dertigste editie van het Brussels Internationaal Festival van de Fantastische Film. Het is de Scream van de jaren 2010: slim, maar niet zo slim dat het saai wordt; grappig, maar niet ten koste van het verhaal; best wel huiveringwekkend, maar niet genoeg om het grote publiek uit de zaal te houden. De dialogen zijn voor de verandering een meerwaarde. En wanneer het stuift, stuift het. Het is niet te merken dat Drew Goddard zijn sporen verdiende als scenarist en producer van Lost en Cloverfield en zich voor het eerst over de regie ontfermde. Bijstand kreeg hij van Joss Whedon (scenario, productie), bekend van Buffy the vampire slayer en The Avengers. The cabin in the woods springt uit de band.

Le week-end de cinq étudiants dans une cabane perdue au fond des bois commence en force. Après une première soirée débridée, une désagréable surprise les attend dans la cave. Au lieu de festoyer, ils doivent se battre pour survivre. Celui qui croit savoir comment cela va se passer a tout faux. Les films d’horreur où l’on joue consciemment avec les clichés du genre sont eux-mêmes devenus clichés. Mais dans The Cabin in the Woods, ce jeu avec les stéréotypes, les codes, les forces et les faiblesses des films d’horreur est exceptionnellement bourré d’originalité, de bonnes idées, d’amour pour le genre et de colère par rapport à la voie inquiétante qu’a pris l’horreur avec Saw et autres tortures obscènes du genre. À cet égard, c’était tout simplement le film parfait pour clore la trentième édition du Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. C’est le Scream des années 2010 : intelligent mais pas à ce point intelligent que ça en devient barbant, drôle mais pas aux dépens de l’intrigue, terrifiant tout en sachant ménager le grand public. Pour changer, les dialogues sont un plus. Et quand ça chauffe, ça chauffe… On ne pourrait pas deviner que Drew Goddard, qui a gagné ses galons en tant que scénariste et producteur pour Lost et Cloverfield, en est à sa première réalisation. Il a pu compter sur le soutien de Joss Wheden (scénariste, producteur), connu pour Buffy the Vampire Slayer et The Avengers. The Cabin in the Woods sort des sentiers battus.
