The Descendants

Après Election (Reese Witherspoon manipule des élections chez les étudiants), About Schmidt (Jack Nicholson on the road dans un camping-car) et Sideways (Paul Giamatti on the road avec une bouteille de pinot noir), la presse américaine a sacré Alexander Payne « roi du film tragicomique d’art et d’essai ». L’Europe était plus critique. Sept ans après Sideways, The Descendants ne va pas réconcilier ses partisans et ses opposants. À Hawaii, Matt King, juriste et grand propriétaire terrien, apprend qu’il n’y a plus d’espoir que sa femme sorte du coma. Il va devoir resserrer les liens avec ses deux filles, Alex, 17 ans, et Scott, 10 ans, mais il a pour l’instant d’autres chats à fouetter. Apprendre la triste nouvelle à ses agressifs beaux-parents, alors qu’une armée de cousins met la pression pour la vente juteuse de terrains encore vierges à des promoteurs immobiliers. Au grand effroi de sa fille aînée, il semble aussi que sa femme avait un amant. Bien que son interprétation soit plus « de bonne qualité » que vraiment exceptionnelle, George Clooney pourrait bien décrocher un Oscar pour ce rôle. La nouvelle venue Shailene Woodley (Alex) nous a davantage impressionné. Payne combine à nouveau des scènes à forte teneur en émotions avec un humour doux-amer. Parfois, le film étincelle. Parfois non. La voix off du début est une solution de facilité, rien de plus. Pas mal, mais ce n’est pas un chef-d’œuvre.

Alexander Payne tot koning van de tragikomische kwaliteitsfilm. Europa was kritischer. The descendants gaat zeven jaar na Sideways voor- en tegenstanders niet dichter bij elkaar brengen. Op Hawaï verneemt jurist en grootgrondbezitter Matt King dat er geen hoop meer is voor zijn comateuze vrouw. Hij zal een sterkere band moeten ontwikkelen met zijn twee dochters, de 17-jarige Alex en de 10-jarige Scott, maar heeft voorlopig nog andere katten te geselen. De agressieve schoonvader moet worden ingelicht. Een legertje neven dringt aan op de miljoenenverkoop van ongerept landgoed aan projectontwikkelaars. Tot afgrijzen van zijn oudste dochter blijkt zijn vrouw er een minnaar op na te hebben gehouden. Hoewel het eerder een degelijke dan een uitmuntende vertolking is, kan George Clooney voor zijn vertolking een Oscar winnen. Wij waren meer onder de indruk van nieuwkomer Shailene Woodley (Alex). Ook dit keer combineert Payne scènes met een grote emotionele resonantie en bitterzoete humor. Soms sprankelt de film, soms niet. De voice-over in het begin is een ordinaire gemakkelijkheidsoplossing. Goed, maar geen meesterwerk.

Payne as the king of superior tragicomic film. Europe was more critical. Seven years after Sideways, the gulf between his champions and his adversaries is not going to be bridged by The Descendants. Hawaii lawyer and large landowner Matt King learns that there is no longer any hope for his wife, who is in a coma. He is going to have to develop a stronger bond with his two daughters, 17-year-old Alex and 10-year-old Scott, but he has other fish to fry first. His aggressive parents-in-law have to be informed, while a small army of cousins is pushing for the sale of some unspoiled land, which could bring in millions, to property developers. The older daughter is horrified to find out that his wife had a lover. Although his performance is solid rather than outstanding, George Clooney may be in line for an Oscar. We were more impressed by newcomer Shailene Woodley as Alex. Once again, Payne combines scenes of great emotional resonance with bittersweet humour. At times the film really comes to life; at times it doesn’t. The voice-over at the beginning is a cheap, easy way out. Good, but no masterpiece.
