Frances Ha

A few weeks ago, Jan Ole Gerster guided us around Berlin in Oh Boy. Soon, Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding) will be dragging us criss-cross all over New York. His film is the better of the two films in attractive black and white that feature young people on the edge of maturity roaming the streets, because it is slightly less artificial and because it stars Greta Gerwig. Anybody able to withstand such a disarming, naturally charming, and incredibly funny woman needs to get their head checked fast. She plays a 27-year-old dance graduate called Frances who volunteers for a company she would actually like to get paid work with. While the people around her have jobs and are consequently able to pay for an apartment in New York – and sometimes even to decorate it – she is stuck treading water. She depends on her friends for a roof over her head. But this rash dreamer is a crack shot at mockingly analysing her own circumstances, ineptitude, and talent for making poorly calculated decisions. The fact that she and most of her friends are so smart and hip and express themselves with such pith and eloquence does occasionally get rather tedious. But let’s just put that down to jealousy. Frances Ha will only be released next week, but this Tuesday, Gerwig and Baumbach are coming to present the film at Bozar.

FR ❙ Il y a quelques semaines, Jan Ole Gerster nous guidait à travers Berlin dans Oh Boy. Bientôt, ce sera au tour de Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding) de nous faire arpenter dans tous les sens New York. Frances Ha, un rien moins maniéré, est le meilleur de ces deux films urbains en noir et blanc où l’on suit des jeunes gens au seuil de l’âge adulte qui errent dans les rues. Mais c’est aussi et surtout grâce à l’irrésistible Greta Gerwig qui y joue une danseuse de 27 ans qui vient de terminer ses études. Frances travaille comme volontaire dans une compagnie pour laquelle elle aimerait danser en étant rémunérée. Alors que tous les amis de son entourage ont déjà un travail et, conséquemment, suffisamment d’argent pour se payer un appartement à New York, elle fait du sur place et dépend d’amis pour avoir une chambre avec un lit. Frances surpasse tout le monde dans sa faculté à analyser de façon lucide sa situation, dans sa maladresse et son talent à prendre des décisions irréfléchies. Parfois, cela nous énerve un peu que tous ses amis soient si minces et branchés et qu’ils puissent s’exprimer de façon aussi claire et éloquente. Mais mettons cela sur le compte de la jalousie. Frances Ha ne sort que la semaine prochaine en salle, mais ce mardi Gerwig et Baumbach viennent à Bozar présenter le film en avant-première.

Enkele weken geleden gidste Jan Ole Gerster ons in Oh Boy nog door Berlijn. Straks loodst Noah Baumbach (The squid and the whale, Margot at the wedding) ons kriskras door New York. Zijn film is de beste van de twee: hij is net iets minder gekunsteld en heeft Greta Gerwig als grote troef. De man of vrouw die tegen zo’n ontwapenende, natuurlijk charmante en door en door grappige vrouw bestand is, moet zich dringend eens laten nakijken. Gerwig speelt de 27-jarige afgestudeerde danseres Frances, die als vrijwilliger vast hangt aan een gezelschap waarvoor ze graag betaald zou dansen. Terwijl de mensen uit haar omgeving wel al een beroep hebben en bijgevolg wel geld hebben om een flat in New York te betalen en eventueel zelfs fraai te decoreren, trappelt zij ter plaatse. Voor een kamer met een bed hangt ze af van vrienden. In het spottende analyseren van haar situatie, haar onhandigheid en talent voor ondoordachte beslissingen is de onbedachtzame droomster een crack. Sporadisch werkt het op de heupen dat zij en de meeste van haar vrienden zo slim en hip zijn en zich zo gevat en eloquent kunnen uitdrukken. Maar plaats dat maar onder de noemer jaloezie. Frances Ha komt pas volgende week in de zalen, maar nu dinsdag al stellen Gerwig en Baumbach de film in Bozar voor.
